Help with HD in Premiere
by Richard Windsor on Sep 23, 2009 at 4:20:32 pm

I am doing HD now in premiere and I am seeing some slight slowdown when working with animation that I create in HD. When editing straight HD footage shot of a Canon Xh A1s it runs smooth, but animation (made in AE) runs a bit choppy. I have 8 cores and am running 16GB of Ram so I have enough power. What could be causing these issues?

I am a bit green when it comes to HD, is there anything I should know about export settings and how it works. Also can anyone reccomend a good book or video on shooting HDV.

Uncompressed HD, I'm assuming that's what you are working with from AE, needs a fast RAID drive system and a very good graphics card on top of processing and memory.

I'll leave the book to someone else.

I would draw the same immediate conclusion as Vince...

Chances are that you're creating much larger files than HDV from your AE renders and your harddrives can't keep up.

On the book...do you want to learn about HDV technically...or do you want to learn how to shoot (format makes little difference when it comes to composition and exposure, etc.)

[Richard Windsor] "I want to learn the technical side."

The Cow has a lot of resources...the ones I know of best are the ones I happened to write:

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/kolb_tim/hdv_vs_hd_primer.php

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/kolb_tim/demystifying_hdv.php

...and some general info on additional HD Formats for reference:

http://library.creativecow.net/articles/kolb_tim/formats.php

And Focal has a book (that I didn't write...but I was the technical editor)

So...there's some stuff to get you started.
