Editing techqnique - dissolve

Hello,
Im trying to figure out how to do a complex dissolve but i cannot seem to find anything on the net about it..
You would of seen in some films, say there are 6 people in a bus , and to show time lapsing, they get slowly dissolved out of the scene.
I would like to dissolve two charecters talking together but when i do a cross dissolve it takes in all th ebackground as well, im thinking the chrecter has to get masked out but not sure how this is done in premiere pro CS3..
Similar to a scene in Rob Rieners "Stand By Me" something like this though the background of my charecters are not so identical ...any ideas anyone

So yes, the movie simply makes use of the common black background. But obviously it only works in that situation.
In After effects you could try using a feathered mask, but it really depends on how the shots were framed.
Another common technique is introducing a foreground object like a pole (that can easy be created in Photoshop or any 3d app), and match the movement with the pan, thus creating an prop separate and create a swipe to the next shot. But again, you need good planning before shooting any of these scenes.

Plan B would have been to shoot with each person leaving, teh rest not moving, and THEN disolve them so the empty background dsiolves over the space where the missing peson was. Locked down camera of course

But although the transition in stand by me is from shot to shot it does seem easier to dissolve into each other as the background is the same..
But you must of seen in films people or objects dissolving out of a SINGLE shot, like my example of time lapsing and people being dissolved of a bus - there must be a way of doing this maybe it can be done in avid and final cut pro but not not in premiere ??
