Adobe Premiere Capture and HDR-HC9
by Matthew Marshall on Sep 12, 2009 at 4:04:29 pm

I am having difficulty capturing from the Sony HDR-HC9.
The is set to HDV 1080i for recording and the output is HDVout. Conversion to dv is off.

Basically i does not recognize the device is connected. "Cannot activate recorder, try resetting device"

Macbook Pro 4,1
Mac osx Leopard 10.5.8
Premiere Version is 4.1.0

Capture Settings are:
NTSC
Sony
Standard
Auto-Detect

Apple Intermediate Codec - 1080i
Project Settings Are the Same

Any help would be appreciated. thanks

After your project is open, open the capture window. In the upper right area of the window you'll see a"Logging" and a "Settings" tab, click settings and make sure that it reads "Capture Format HDV", not SD. Many times when I would set up a new project and chose HDV initially, it would swich to SD when I opened the capture window.

It gave me the same message that you're getting.

Hope that's all it is.

The options i have on the dropdown menu in setup are None, and DV/HDV...

It has been set to DV/HDV this whole time so unfortunitely that is not it.

I encounter this exact problem with an HDR-HC7 which is almost identical to the HC9. Whether it is the computer or the camera, the system is VERY picky about the order in which the camera is powered on, the cable is connected to the camera, Premiere Pro is started, and Capture is selected. And it doesn't seem to be consistent. This sequence usually works for me:

1. Connect cable to camera.
2. Power-on camera and place in PLAY/EDIT mode.
3. Start Premiere Pro and open project
4. Select "Capture".

This usually works, but when it doesn't, I try again mixing up the order. PITA. Hope this helps.

that does not help at all, it is still not recognized... it works fine with the hdv/dv conversion on as soon as you try to capture hdv it does not work.

And yes, the format is in HDV1080i, it was captured in HDV1080i... it appears the internet has no answers for this whatsoever...
