Choppy, Stuttering AVCHD Preview

Hi all :). I'm new to AVCHD, having purchased a fairly slick Canon HF S10 days ago.
Tried importing some footage from the camera onto the computer just now, worked without a hitch, and showing up on PPro CS4. Recorded at a variety of bit-rates to see what quality sacrifices I might have to make due to my less-than-stellar computer. 24mbps in the preview window was a slideshow, looking like a collection of still HD photos, instead of the 25p intended. Even 12mbps was only just about watchable. I took a chunk of that file, put it in the timeline and rendered, and then a perfect picture resulted. However, being able to review the raw files without rendering them would be such a fundamental bonus. I've tried copying from the camera to my hard-disk, but no luck.
My specs are as follows: Q6600 Quad Core at 2.4ghz, Radeon HD4870 512mb, 4gb of pretty decent RAM, XP Home (capping off my RAM to 3.25gb), and around 1.6TB of HDD space scattered across several much used drives. I thought my PC should be able to handle even rudimentary previewing. Playing the .mts files back in VLC-player gives the same results. Is my computer not up to scratch, or is there something I can do?
Thanks a bunch!
