Exporting Movie for Streaming Web in Premiere Pro CS4
by Sharon McKittrick on Apr 28, 2009 at 12:01:37 am

Hi guys! You were so helpful to me the last post I made, I thought I'd come back and present this new issue for your advice.

I have created a 6 minute long movie (mainly stills and titles) that I wish to output for streaming web. When I export the movie in AVI it is 1.31 Gigs - HUGE! The Quicktime export is 1.31 Gigs and the H256(?) version is still 129M - still HUGE!

I sent the video to a friend who converted the file to an FLV file and he got it down to 68M, but the transitions are somewhat pixelated.

How can I get this video optimized for streaming on mhy client's web site? thank you so much for your help. - Sharon

Depending on the amount of motion, I find 500 / 550 Kb/s VBR 2 Pass flv files do very well. We stick with a resolution of 512x288 (widescreen). Depending on the type of transition you are using, you may see pixelation.

It also depends on the overall quality / resolution of your footage. In a noisy, shaky footage, The compressor will spend most of the data in these areas. Transitions are last in line since every part of the screen changes at every frame.

Basically, when cutting for the web, you are better off sticking with cuts and quick dissolves.

Vince - Thank you so much for your response.

I set the video up initially for 720x480 as that was the client's request. The entire movie is made up of still images using only default crossfades and a couple of page turn transitions. You mention "500/550 Kb/s VBR 2 Pass FLV files" above. Is that a setting I can export to in Premiere or is that an export setting in Flash? My client has the conversion software and we are getting together to try and figure this thing out.

I appreciate your help. I have only made four short movies, but never one for streaming web, so I'm really at a loss.

Thanks again!
