Can't import FCP XML into Premiere 4.0.1
by Dale Hildebrand on Nov 27, 2008 at 9:50:59 pm

Every time I try to import an xml (xml version 4 from Final Cut) into Premiere Pro 4.0.1 it seems to be working, but then it fails to load in the project window. EDL's work, but I need an XML. Any wisdom is greatly appreciated.

Have you had a good look at the video:

"Kevan O'Brien, systems engineer for Adobe, demonstrates the workflow between Final Cut Pro and Adobe CS4 including the support for the Apple ProRes codec."

http://www.studiodaily.com/main/minisites/adobepremiere/f/mwhatsnew/10122.h...

Works for me with FCP 6.0.5

Yes, thank you, I've seen the video and my workflow is exactly the same. What I have discovered is that I can import xmls from FCP if the source material was ProRes. The problem I'm having is importing XMLs from FCP where the source material was Proxies from R3Ds.

Note: a friend is doing the same workflow with proxies and he is able to import the proxy-based XMLs. We are doing the same workflow. Not sure what I'm missing.

Are you trying to make it link to the media? ...is that the point of failure?

I'm not sure if that is what is taking place at the point of failure, but I "click" import" and and the yellow line streaks across as if importing is taking place, but nothing ever appears in the project window.

Dale (or anyone else), did you ever find a solution to this problem? We've just encountered the same issue.

Update - In my case this was due to an issue with Multiclips. Found a workaround in the end.

According to the Adobe team, they were telling me that it is a build thing and they will try to address this in build 4.0.2.

Oh, and try to make an xml without audio - it should import.

We're experiencing a similar situation... trying to import Final Cut XML exports into Premiere after doing the sound sync in Final Cut.

Our Final Cut project file is referencing ,mov proxies generated from RED footage (.r3d).

The weird thing is, one asst. editor has been sending scenes as XML exports and they import into Premiere with no issue. Another asst. editor hasn't been able to generate an XML that can be imported. Premiere always looks like it's about to work (the yellow task bar), but then states that Premiere encountered a "generic error."

You gotta love that... "generic error."

So we're not sure why one person's XML files import with no issue, while the others is causing problems. They seem to be set up the same. I'm sure there's one little box somewhere not clicked right, but currently we can't figure out what it is.

Anybody with a solid answer?

So, I have had the same problem as Jonas ever since I have updated to FCP 7. My only work around is to use one of our old computers that has FCP 6 on it. If anyone knows any better workarounds or fixes that would be greatly appreciated.

Exactly the same problem we're having. The machines with FCP 7 installed won't export an XML that can be imported into Premiere. Our assistant editor is actually having to export the XML's from FCP 7, import them into FCP 6 on an older machine, and then export from there, so we can import into Premiere.

Anyone with an idea of why this might be happening please post.

My only theory is that Final Cut actually made the change on purpose because they don't want you leaving their domain to work in Premiere. ;-o

hi. i've been having the same problem since upgrading to SL & FCP 7.

two possible workarounds:

1) export the xml interchange format 4 from FCP 7. that has worked but not consistently.

2) if you've preserved your version of FCP 6, open the exported FCP 7 xml sequence in FCP 6, then reexport the sequence to xml interchange 4, then import into PR, then save PR project and import to AE. a pain, but it does seem to work.

We tried simply exporting using format 4 from FCP 7, but it didn't work. Had to go back to FCP 6.

I just had the same.

It finally worked by exporting the XML from FCP 7
- copy it to another mac running FCP 6
- opening the XML there
- exporting it again (to xml4)
- copy it back to the mac running Premiere Pro 4.01.

The only thing is I had to relink all the (Red) footage, which takes a lot of time, is there a workaround for this ?

I have had mild success with editing the XML or .pproj (also XML) file in either a text program, or an XML editor like Adobe Dreamweaver.

You can do a "search/replace" to change all ".mov" references to ".r3d" files, and thus Premiere will auto-find most of the files (as opposed to having to re-associate every single file).

If you try this method, BACK UP YOUR ORIGINAL. It's easy to mess up a project/xml file doing this.
