Another way to do what you want is to "Copy" your effects. Then when you put in the new clip, just "paste" the effects on it.

This only works in CS3!
If you want to replace a clip in the timeline while keeping the effects, transitions etc you can do this several ways.
1a. Clip for clip - Select the clip in the Project Panel, hold the ALT key, drag it ontop of the clip you want to replace in the timeline, when it highlights over the top let the mouse go (HOLD ALT STILL).
1b. Clip for clip - Select clip in project panel. Right click the clip in timeline. select replace>bin.
2. Frame Match - Open the clip you want to replace with in the source monitor. move the playhead to the frame you want to match in replacement. Find the matching frame in the timeline clip. Right click and replace>from source monitor, match frame.
