No audio from timeline

Ok, I'm using a copy of Premiere Pro 1.5 that has worked fine in the past. I went to start editing a new movie, and for some reason I wasn't getting audio when I played it in the timeline. I've discovered that:
-Video output for everything is working at all times, and audio works for all videos when played outside of Premiere
-No audio output whatsoever from timeline (tried music, tried all tracks, with output enabled on all)
-Some filetypes get audio in the Project window (.wmv, .mpg), and some don't (.avi, .mp3)
-I can export movie files that will have audio in a standalone player (even though I can't listen to them in any way in Premiere)-In Project > Project Settings > General... > Playback Settings, Audio Playback is set to Audio Hardware (the most common solution I found searching Google)
Wtf is going on? I recently formatted, although I can't remember if my last succesful usage of Premiere was before or after that. I also just uninstalled and reinstalled the whole thing.

It seems that you are mixing many types of audio formats in one timeline. Premiere actually only officially support few audio format. I'm not sure where you audio is coming from, but there are also many types of AVI, with very obscure audio codecs.
Now if the exact same files worked in the past, you might be up against something corrupted in Premiere. But, I personaly make sure I convert everything to PCM before import. You can either use Audition, or another little application that I love called Xilisoft.
I would also delete all the peak files from your project; that will force Premiere to generate new ones. The location is in the scratch disk preference tab.

Well I mixed all of those types because I was trying to see if any worked, and tried them each in a separate new project. I took one file captured by premiere and one by Windows Movie Maker, and two others from my computer that I know had worked before, and a music file. I've never had a problem with missing audio from any file type before. Is there a way I can return every setting to default?

I put clip in source monitor....set in and out and insert to timeline and only the video appears on timeline...no audio...although audio is there...when I click the source clip the audio plays fine..

Check the type of adding your doing from the source monitor, button switches from Video ONLY (Prob set to this one), Audio ONLY, Video+Audio. Or the target tracks aren't set to anything in the timeline, depending on how you're adding the media to the timeline.

Wow I actually just figured it out, of course there was a very simple solution...It was in Edit > Preferences > Audio Hardware...
For some reason it was set to the onboard sound instead of my sound card...interesting that it played audio for some types in the Project window...Now it all works.
