Moving Audio clips in the timeline without snapping to frames
by solagratia77 on Sep 7, 2006 at 8:45:30 pm

Hello all.....

I find Premier Pro's audio editing capability to be excellent.
However I have one small problem.

When I am placing audio clips in the timeline,
the clip snaps to every frames, even if I turn the
snapping (S) off.

In audio applications such as Pro Tools and Audition,
I am being able to move audio clips freely not snapping
to frames.

I need this feature because percise placement of audio clips
to sync with the visual is essential to me.

Is it possible in Premiere Pro?

I have looked up the HELP docs and couldn't find any.
I would very musch appreciate any help.

Thank you

Right-click on any clip and click on Unlink in the pop-up screen. The linked clips will be freed.

...I'm pretty sure the unlinked audio clips are still confined to the frame marks. I know Vegas edits accurately down to fractions of a frame, but I don't think Premiere does actually.

Change the display in the timeline to audio units, and make sure any audio is unlinked from the video. You can then place the audio in between frames.

Yes... all other can work. Expand the timeline to have more precise movements. A counter let you know the frames youre moving. You also can select V tool, hold ALT and move the audio with the mouse . Sometimes you have to lock any audio below the track. confusing?

Wow! Thank you all for your help!

Yes, by setting the timeline to 'audio units'
it worked perfectly.

It would have been nice if the audio clips can
still move freely in frames mode.
(...Maybe in the future version?) For now I am
more than happy to change modes.

And maybe I can assign a toggle shortcut key,
sice I know I'll be going in and out of the
'audio units' mode a lot.

Thank you again Jeff and everyone else.

Thank you
