iPad as a Video Monitor
by Jane Colalillo on Nov 28, 2010 at 1:20:53 pm
Was looking for a small lcd field monitor to use for industrial video prod. when someone told me the next generation of iPad is reported to have video input, making it useable as a handheld video monitor. I don't need anything of great quality... just need to see framing and action... and have decent battery life.
Does anyone know about this new feature for the iPaD? Will it be worth waiting for?

I sincerely doubt this feature will EVER come. Yes, an iMac can function as a second display, but only over Display port. Everything else in the product line (except of course displays) only sends video out.
For that matter, the iPad only sends out under very specific situations.... I wouldn't hold my breather for input.

I am a total and complete noobie to the topic (and don't even have my iPad yet), but could an adapter be made to plug into the 30-pin dock connector to add some type of video input, and then create an app that displays the video?
Is there anything in the App Store / SDK TOS that prevent this?

Video In is NOT part of the SDK or APIs

I have been looking for the same answer to the Ipad question. After reading tons of articles on the subjects it sounds like the next generation of Ipad will have a VGA connection with video out only for higher quality output. Nothing about video input.
I do have some broadcast monitors that I am selling if you are interested. Sony 8" CRT, Sony 9" LCD.

I would love to use the iPad AND the iPod Touch or iPhone for a monitor. The iPod Touch would be a perfect monitor for on top of the 5D or 7D DSLR cameras.
Maybe someone can make a device and crack the code.

The screen resolution is lower than the LCD on your camera.
Just BUY a friggin monitor. Marshall, SmallHD, etc.

In a post on a different forum, i read that there is no Application Program Interface (known as API) for live video in the System Development Kit (known as SDK). Being so, a programmer would have to write one from scratch, an extremely costly, time consuming process. It would probably take a team of programmers several months. However, video from the network (from a web cam) is possible, so making a copy of that API and modifying it to have the video come from the audio / video connector (which is already available) should be relatively easy?, anyone out there?
I think that this functionality was not included for some ridiculous , sinister , unknown reason by Mr. J

i think it would actually be pretty easy to come up with something...i use the app stream to me to watch movies from my mac and listen to music and if you set it up to see a live stream from your desktop i'm sure it could be done...i havent tried it but what from what i've seen from stream to me i wouldnt be surprised if it is possible. write them a letter and suggest it..who knows?

The iPad as a monitor would be ideal because it has a built in camera. With any Interotron set up, it would be the ideal monitor/camera return system for a director/operator. Check out the results Errol Morris has had with the Interotron as an interview or "real people" device.

I found a cool app that you can make cool videos from your Iphone! It lets you take your current background and make a video with a creature of your choice. I thought it was pretty cool and wanted to share it since there are other forms of multimedia art here. The program is called Creatures FX.
