The Blender 3D Survival Guide - Part 11The Blender 3D Survival Guide - Part 11

This tutorial takes the opportunity to study how to create Volumetric Lights in Blender and in the process it shows some very useful modeling techniques. You will learn how to carve holes into planes, how to create new edges and faces and how to use the Array modifier to create multiple copies of the same geometry with speed and ease. This is a two-part tutorial.

It's always tough for me to split a tutorial in two. I know that having to wait for the second part is not fun but, at the same time, I don't want to rush and cram too much in half an hour. The second part will cover so much goodness that it needed to be on its own.
Cheers.

Paolo, just wanted to take a break and thank you for your wonderful tutorials. I tried Blender once last year and gave up. But your approach of setting up the workspace like After Effects really helped me get my bearings. I feel I'm over the hump now and will be able to make some use of this great program. Thanks again!

Paolo,

First of all, thanks so much for these tutorials. Like others here, I've tried Blender a few times before and given up. Now, thanks to you, I feel I'm really getting the hang of it.

But I've run into a problem with Episode 11. I can't seem to replicate what you do at 19.30, when you select a vertex on the circle and then another vertex on the square. As you can see from the attached image, I can select a vertex on one object, but not the other.

Could you kindly direct me as to what I'm missing?

Thank you!

Hi Simon.
Yes, what's happening with your scene is actually pretty simple to fix. Apparently you have exited edit mode before creating the circle, therefore creating two different objects. That is something that I forgot to address. If you call the toolbox and create an object while you are in edit mode, you simply add the geometry to the existing one. If you do the same while in object mode, you create two distinct objects.
Remove the circle, select the square, enter edit mode and then add the circle again.

Good luck.

Thank you, I'm glad that you like BSG. Yes, more episode will be available. In fact I'm working on the final parts if the BSG 12, which should be ready tomorrow or Friday at the latest.

I like it when you split them up. When you think about it, you are able to go through the process in around half an hour, but for someone like me who is knew to it, it takes a good hour and a half, sometimes even 2 hours(from watching what you do, switching to blender, doing it myself). It takes up a pretty big chunk of my day but is definitely worth it. But you should consider making them shorter and split into more parts.

Great tutorial by the way! I can't wait to see how this is going to turn out.
