I want to create 3d models of plants and leaves.

If I have the liberty of taking high quality photographs of a small plant or a leaf, from what angles I should take the photos and in what format/resolutions to save the photos and also do I need to have alpha channel info in the photos ( after processing in Photoshop)?

After above is done how to use these photos in Blender 2.5 to create 3d models that looks like natural plant or a leaf but now in 3d? Is this possible to automate this process as much as possible or do I still to draw manually lots of polygons and curves?

The goal is to create extremely realistic 3d model of plant and a leaf that looks the real plant or leaf without doing lots of manual work ( other than taking photos and Photoshop work).

You want extremely realistic 3d models of plants without a lot of work and with no experience. Don't you think something is amiss? Without experience, you're going to spend a lot of time spinning your wheels in every aspect. Without a technical director you're going to spend a lot of time just on learning how to model, render, texture, and light, before even starting on the art and biology. Extreme realism comes about by proper lighting and proper texturing. If you don't know how to light, then the most amazing plant model will look fake.

Your time is better spent with a plant generator:
http://ngplant.sourceforge.net/

Or plant libraries:

Other misc software:

If you still wish to model, in general and turn a 2d image into a 3d model, most basic modeling tutorials start with this. Here are two of many. Add the image to your display ports and off you go.

This response isn't Blender specific but...

You might take a look at arc3d. They will take a series of photographs from various angles and generate the 3d object. I think that might be the piece of things you're looking for.
