The Blender 3D Survival Guide - Part 1The Blender 3D Survival Guide - Part 1

Blender 3D Tutorials: The Blender Survival guide, hosted by Paolo Ciccone, is a multi-part tutorial that aims to teach you the necessary skills to get up to speed with Blender in the shortest time possible. All the essential stuff without the 'geeky' parts. Think of it as 'Bear Grylls' for Blender.

As someone who is just beginning to get into 3D, this was an excellent intro into this Open Source (and in the past difficult) software.
Thanks again and I can't wait for the next installment!

I've been trying to find a way to use blender for a while. I'm really just used to traditional stop motion and after effects motion graphics. I really like the idea of open source and it's true Blender looks sophisticated but quite scary compared to other applications I've looked at but can't afford. I'd be keen to know if there's a way similar to cinema 4d for extruding vectors and creating 3d logos for example? If you are planning more tutorials I'm keen to learn blender for use in a motion graphics way and also possibly for aiding pre viz and set builds for in camera animation.

very good work on these videos, much appreciated.

I cannot wait to see what you have in store for us AE users who need a 3D solution. I am looking forward to your advice on 3D text and titles, among other things.

Hello, great first tutorial. I think, Blender is great but very tricky. After installation blender, the control&left mouse button didn't work. Moving around the camera worked by pressing down the mouse-wheel.(MS-Mouse). I changed it using the (hidden)configuration menue "View&Controls" on bottom. So, I'm ready for take off on Monday (:-))
Ciao

I am a new Blender user, and I found your tutorial extremely helpful. I already feel as if I have "ownership" and control of this application!

One note: I am a Mac user, and it appears that in order to do a horizontal split, I need to move my mouse to the right side of the current panel. If I move to the left side, it splits the panel to the left.

@terry, good question, for Blender, like any other 3D app, you need a 3-button mouse. Logitech mice work just fine, that's what I use right now.

@Alberto, is it possible that the default file is read-only? Check a file called .B.blend in your home directory. If it has the read-only protection please remove it and it should work.

Hey Wesley, glad you found us. You'll definitely like the ease of management of the licenses in Blender :)
Actually I carry with me a USB key with all 3 versions of Blender: Mac OS, Windows and Linux. If I get to a client and I need to use Blender, I can run the right version directly from the USB drive.

Paolo Ciccone you are a great teacher. I wish I had seen these Blender and AE tutorials before I started my last project. It would have made the workflow a lot easier. Thanks for the knowledge.

Julia JenkinsA whole new world!
by on Mar 12, 2010 at 11:39:33 am

Thanks Paolo for these brilliant, lucid Blender tutorials. I had tried to learn from the Wiki manual last fall but gave up after a week as I just couldn't figure out where to start. I love this "spoon feeding" that you are giving us:-) It's just right. I watched all of the tutorials yesterday and today I went back to the first one and actually set up my work space following your instructions.

I am still devoted to my Apple Pro mouse, therefore I don't have right/left clicking and scroll wheel. I found that command clicking accomplishes everything that right clicking does but I haven't discovered anything that will zoom like the scroll wheel. Is there a key combo that will do that or do I finally have to buy a new mouse?

Thank you again for these fabulous lessons.
Best
Julia

Sorry, + - does not zoom the camera it just zooms the view in the Blender window I think. So I still have the question about an alternative method for zooming the camera.

I watched part 1 the other night of Surviving Blender and was able to pick up on what your doing. Blender is a little different but seems to be a powerful program from what I hear. I'm looking forward to watching more of your tutorials.

Hello Paolo, I use blender with on a Mac, I have gotten my nephew interested in learning blender. However he is on a PC and we don't know which version to download and what to do with the Python part of the download. He has a Windows Vista Intel Core 2 Duo system.

Can you please give me advice on what to tell him.

Thank you.

Thanks

Hi Chris.
To follow my tutorials you should download the 2.49 version, yiu can use a 32 bit version. For Python I think that it should be included. I'm sorry but I only use Windows to test my software so I don't have the experience about the Blender installation on that OS. Maybe somebody on. PC can give you advice.

Best.

Ken Lawson@The Blender 3D Survival Guide - Part 1
by on May 2, 2012 at 8:00:29 am

I essentially want to make animated titles for my film productions. When I first downloaded Blender I concluded that I would never be able to do anything with it, having tried so-called tutorials on You Tube done by people who haven't the faintest idea how to teach something so complex in a way that a newcomer can understand. Then I discovered these tutorials by someone who certainly does know how to teach. I do not export to After Effects, which I do not have, but to an Apple Quicktime file which has an Alpha Channel. This file is then imported into Sony Vegas where the Alpha channel is activated and the background becomes invisible - something I want, though it may be that I shall use it relatively rarely. I am using Blender 2.49b because it makes your tutorials easy to follow, but in any case I notice that support for Quicktime seems to have been removed from the latest Blender. Many thanks indeed for these excellent tutorials. Like a lot of other people, I am immensely grateful.
