CANON T3i Recording Stops at 12ish Minutes :(

Hey Curtis, that's caused by a couple of hard limits built into the camera and there are no effective workarounds - what I do is quickly stop recording and then a second later start another clip but yes I do lose that time inbetween - with the HD DSLRs almost all have some kind of time or file size limit that you will run into - I believe the Panasonic G2 has a hack that you can do it to record 20 minutes

This is normal on all Canon HDSLRs prior to 5D Mk III (which can do 29.59mins but with broken sequential files).

The $700 Panasonic GH2 has essentially unlimited recording time outside of the EU. European models are limited to 30 minutes continuous to avoid the camcorder tax. EU models can, however, be hacked to remove this limitation.

Canons ought to come with a warning label: "shoots for no more than 12 minutes of continuous video - viewfinder and autofocus stop working in video mode".

I was actually shocked when I discovered these limitations on my new Canon camera - so I got rid of it and got a GH2, which has none of them.

Hi Curtis this is a well publicised fact and is also in your instruction manual, even the Canon 1DX or 5D MkIII stops continuous recording at 29.59 mins. This limitation is both a recording and a crucial operational to stop your DSLR being classed as a Camcorder, in Europe this recording length in one take anyl onger would render this in different tax/duty class a camcorder and increase its price.

Primarily you have DSLR photographic camera that shoot video not the other way round.

To overcome this limitation you can record via HDMI to an Atmos Ninja or a device that will record hdmi output to a hard disk recorder or capture to a computer.
