EOS plugin for Final Cut is out!

The EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro is out. It allows using the Final Cut log and transfer window to directly import Canon H264 video from CF cards via conversion to ProRes. Here is the link:

If you are like me and have not used the Log & Transfer window much, be sure to set the import preferences to the format you really want. On first use it defaults to 444.

Ok found out what was wrong.

1. You must have the .THM files to go with the video, otherwise the plugin won't recognise the clip.
2. You can't trick it by just creating a .THM from a text editor, this will cause FCP to crash
3. If you have lost the .THM files (like I have) you can just copy a working one to the same name as the movie file, but with a .THM extension. The picture and exif info will be wrong but if will show up in the log and transfer window.

Anyone know how to recreate the .THM files properly ?

Is this any faster or better quality than converting to ProRess with MPEGstreamclip?

I find it a heck of a lot faster than before. Now, it's just launch log and transfer and pop in your CF card. The card files show up in the FCP log and transfer window and allow you to select the clips you do or don't want to transcode. Mark the files and the batch starts. The new clips show up transcoded right in your designated FCP logging bin.

This has improved my workflow a LOT.

Figures this comes out AFTER we have transcoded over 2500 clips and renamed them via slate. This will be a great tool to have on set for asst editor - like it a lot.

Things to try:

1. Make sure your directory structure is like this

/DCIM/100EOS7D

where is some top level folder. The plugin seems to be a bit particular about the directory layout.

2. Make sure that you don't have any other files in other formats, in the directory. Only have files that came from the camera.

The .THM files contain the meta data and thumbnail JPEG for each of the MOV files created. You must have both of these in place for Log & Transfer to correctly identify the directory as being one containing canon media. You get the same error message for either incorrect directory structure or missing media / THM files.

The only other thing I would do, is try copying over say just one MOV and THM file into the correct directory structure and seeing if will recognise that. Also, confirm that the plugin installed correctly by seeing if it come up in the preferences pane of the LOg & Transfer window.

Apart from that, I can't replicate the problem. My problem was first not having the THM files, and secondly not having the expected directory structure.

***** ALSO Make sure that the directory you select when adding from the Log & Transfer window is not lower down than DCIM or more than one dir up from DCIM ****

i.e. Given My Directory structure is this:

PROJECTS -> Slimbridge -> DCIM -> 100EOS7D

Then when clicking Add Volume from the log and Transfer window:

Selecting PROJECTS will fail
Selecting Slimbridge will work
Selecting DCIM will work
Selecting 100EOS7D will fail

I have not used premiere pro and therefore can't really comment on the premiere pro workflow. However, any editing system is going to struggle with h.264 files as they are in a delivery format not an editing format.

So my advice would be to convert them into an appropriate editing format that suits your workflow. In addition, I would adopt a strategy to back up your source material. This, apart from giving you piece of mind in the event of a data loss, gives you options later to transcode to a different codec if needed.

We're having the same problem / error - Anyone else find a different workaround?

Hi James - Did you use a utility to uninstall the plugin? Or, did you just drag it to the trash and re-download / re-install it? (and, if so, what is the name of the file, and where is it found? We just looked in the FCP User Data -> Plugins folder, and it's not in there(?)

Thank you James - We found it! However, it didn't solve the problem, lol.

We trashed the plugin, trashed all our FCP preferences, re-installed the plugin, re-started, re-launched FCP, still no luck.

Maybe it's a Snow Leopard thing - We're running 10.6.3 and FCP 6.0.5... hmmm. Thanks anyhow for the response, though!

I'm realizing that I'm running Mac OS 10.4.11 and think I might need to be running 10.6.2 or later. I'm going to buy Snow Leopard in the morning and see if that solves the problem. Good luck to me!

How do I ensure that the .THM files are in the folder with the actual .MOV files when I transfer the files from my camera. (Canon 60d)

I'm having issues even after reading through this entire string. I've installed EOS Movie plugin E-1 V 1.2, but when I open FCP/Log and Transfer, then select the DCIM folder from the EOS Digital on my desktop (the original CF card from the camera, in a card reader) I get the "Invalid directory" warning. I've also tried just selecting the dmg of the EOS_Digital on the desktop, but still no thumbnails are showing up. And EOS does not appear in the Import Preferences.

I'm trying to load files from a T2i, and have followed the procedures I've found on line for modifying the camera.plist with Textwrangler to add the T2i. Seeing as how EOS does not show up at all in the Import Preferences it makes me think that even though I can find the plugin installed in library/application support/ProAps.... FCP does not see it.

I've installed this on my home system and it works fine (OS 10.5.6 FCP 6)

Can someone point me towards a solution?

I'm using FCP 7 in this case. Thanks for the heads up on FCPX, but I'm guessing it will be a while before we'd upgrade.
