Guillem VenturaRGB monitoring for DCP output?
by on Aug 12, 2011 at 8:32:34 am

Hi,

We're getting ready to grade a film to be screened in DCP format.

I'll be using a HP Dreamcolor monitor, which I'm doubting how to feed:

- YUV to RGB: via the usual Decklink -> HDlink HDSDI to DVI path

- DVI straight: taking the DVI output straight of the Quadro 4000 card.

Since the final delivery is RGB (via TIFFS o Jpeg 2000 that will be converted to XYZ) I guess avoiding the YUV conversion would turn into better acuracy.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

If you are feeding the Dreamcolor with a HD-Link Pro is it display port? You mentioned DVI which would be 8bit. You can set the output of Resolve to 3G XYZ SDI which should feed the HD-Link Pro, I believe. How are you calibrating the Dreamcolor? You will need to profile it for DCI P3 space or as close as the display can get to that.

Thanks Robert, sorry for the late rep!

You are so right about the DVI being only 8-bit.

The only way to output 3G XYZ SDI is with the Decklink 4K, and it would work for XYZ projectors, not the DreamColor, which only takes RGB in.

I am using the HP "Advanced Profiling Solution", which is everything but advanced, and keeps me wondering where in my devices chain does so much banding come from…
The screen comes ready for DCI P3 standards (60cd/m - 2.6 gamma, white point…)

Cheers!

would like to ask few equation about this as well :

when grading for DCP off course the first step calibrate your monitor gamut as wide as possible (DCP P3 )

but :
does it make sense sending YUV Rec709 SDI signal to the monitor ?
should it Be RGB unscaled ?

robert mention that resolve can send XYZ over the SDI ? but would the monitor show proper color ?

XYZ conversion : are those Lut to convert ""safe"" meaning that what and how much the image could shift ? compared to work XYZ from the beginning (if is possible without a DCP compliant projector ...)

thanks
