 | no GT120 on new macs?
by Arthur Puig on Aug 9, 2010 at 9:38:27 pm |
The new Mac Pros are ready to order in the Mac Stores, but I noticed there's no option for a GT120 like its predecessor, for any model. I wonder what if there will be new specs for Resolve.

For now, order the GT120 and FX4800 from the graphic accessories list.

Just bought mine for $140 through Apple. Better get on it before they take them down like the 285's.

What happens then, I wonder? Curious if the BM guys are nervous, or maybe they know something we don't.

Blackmagic will have to find a work around for the NVIDIA GeForce GT 120, its just business, there is no way when DaVinci comes out that you are going to have to find a video card off ebay to make it run?? That won't happen, so Buying hardware for an Application that isn't even out yet sounds silly. IMHO.
All Blackmagic is doing right now is playing ping pong with Apples INSANITY and making changes to their hardware configs. Having an ATI and an NVIDIA card?? yeah, could be. but no-one knows. But if the card is not available at a re-tailer for NEW, Blackmagic Can't make it part of their config, thats business suicide.

It's not silly to buy exactly what they've tested the software on. What IS silly, is to wait and hope for something else to come along even though the sure thing is right in front of your face. So much gloom and doom. If something doesn't work, then I sell it on eBay and I'm only out a couple hundred bucks.

I don't mind buying a GT120, actually I did buy a 285, what I'm worried is that Resolve hasn't come up yet, and when it does, who knows what specs are going to be posted, maybe way better than a 120/quadro or 285 config.
Fortunatelly we have some Blackmagic people giving us some answers, and I'm sure whatever it is they can make it work, it's just the fact of buying equipment that's going eol for a software that hasn't come up yet brings a little anxiety and uncertainty to the process.

I just got my GT 120 today too just in case
but I'm starting to get a weird feeling about this, i'm not spending any more money until the release date and specifications are finally truly RESOLVED, it's already week 2 in August, apart from the $995 how much will I really need to make this thing work properly and reliably.
there are thousands of 2008 3.1 macPros that might not be compatible, and now Nvidia is getting dropped by Apple
I can't help to think and feel that there is a problem here, and there are alot of people investing money in anticipation and preparing in advance for this release, and the weeks needed afterwards to actually learn the program before it can be put to use, now the problem has become the necessary hardware that will be required
it's not Resolve for mac, but Resolve for a specific type of mac, and that is now changing
I got confirmation today from apple dealer about conflicts of interest between apple and Nvidia, the future looks dim here.
Is october a more reasonable release date??????
that way we can continue to book future jobs on Apple Color

Its kinda been a rumor, but basically Apple has been in talks with AMD/ATI for a while about using their processor's for Apple computers. Apple's stand is that they would get AMD chips for pennies and make AMD a bigger better company and then they would probably own a bit of AMD's future technologies as well. So when NVIDIA got wind of this they got mad and told INTEL and now INTEL and NVIDIA are kinda mad at Apple. Intel not as much because they do other stuff with Apple, but NVIDIA really mad, because if technologies come out that use ATI chips and compete with NVIDIA CUDA, then.. It's all corporate B.S. and we the consumers are getting the SHAFT.
Anyway, LINUX options are looking better and better everyday. I have been an Apple zelot for years, but with Steve being sicker then any of us can even imagine and Apple doing weird things before Steve "Leaves the Building" I'de imagine iPads are Apples future not what we are griping about here. I think LINUX will be the future of high end computing.

As I've thought all along, seems a waste of time to buy or do anything until actual product is released - I prefer to continue to make money using tools that work and are available - once Resolve on mac has been out for a few months I'll review all the postings and articles based on real world use and then consider purchasing based on configurations that other people have already beta tested.
I am under no illusions that the mere existence of a new tool that does more or less the same things as tools I already have will catapult my business to new levels - but it might bring me in the odd extra job here or there.

Seriously, these are all rumors. The same rumor about Apple dropping NVIDIA was going on over a year ago.

I just order a 120, just in case, I guess I'll sell the ATI that comes with the new Mac Pros, I'm hoping that I don't have to sell the 120 because of a newer or better config, we need Resolve NOW!!!

Maybe Blackmagic should make a deal with Nvidia and sell those cards in their own website. I also heard that Nvidia is taking control of the driver development for Mac, I wonder how this fits in the whole equation, but hey, we\'re just mere spectators here

If it comes down to it, we can get our PC geek friends to flash NVIDIA cards for us. haha.

LOL!!! That'd be awesome!!!
Specially if they list that as a hardware requirement
EOL GT120 for Mac or flashed (whichever available)

Maybe Blackmagic should stick a couple of Nvidia's into a Multibridge.
