Hello everyone,

now that Resolve 9 is official and people are using it in production, its time to update the Standard Candle.
A standard candle is a known source of luminosity .
Here some more detailed information what it is used in astronomy :
http://www.astro.ex.ac.uk/people/hatchell/rinr/candles.pdf

I created a Resolve document that everyone can import and flick through the versions to see how much performance their system has.
Please post the numbers and refer to this thread as a reference how "good" your system performs.
There is only one footage file used and it comes with the DVD.
So the only thing you need to do is to use the "Change source folder" function to re-link to the file called 01412968.mov

The project itself is HD with 100% default values , the footage is SD to minimize HD stress.
This test is designed to put stress on your GPU pipeline, so be sure you have enough cooling.

Here the results from our system.

Globalstor workstation , 24 GB, 2x Intel Xeon X5680 @ 3.33 GHz
Quadro 6000 UI , Cubix Desktop with 4X ZOTAC ZT-50103-10P GeForce GTX 580 3GB

V02 08 blur nodes 24 fps
V03 16 blur nodes 24 fps

V05 64 blur nodes 09 fps
V06 01 NR 2 nodes 24 fps
V07 03 NR 2 nodes 20 fps
V08 06 NR 2 nodes 11 fps

Here is the YouSendIt file :
http://www.yousendit.com/download/TEhYaUNGSWhKV05vZE1UQw
Please share and host it if you can.

Happy testing and please post you results and system specs

[Sascha Haber] "The project itself is HD with 100% default values , the footage is SD to minimize HD stress."
= "The project itself is High Definition with 100% default values , the footage is Standard Definition to minimize Hard Drive stress." (the question would arise ;-)

thanks for the project and the figures. Not yet running v9, but in the meanwhile I've put the project file here :

Hi Sasha!

Excuse me for stupid question, but there's one thing I can't get: which DVD are you talking about? Where do I get the source footage?

Thanx,

Artem.

Hi Sascha,

Thanks for posting the new improved Standard Candle. I actually had some interesting results.

Our configs are similiar, except you have the Zotac, I'm using the EVGA 580 3GB Classifieds X3 in Cubix.

My Results:

V01 04 blur nodes 24 fps
V02 08 blur nodes 24 fps
V03 16 blur nodes 24 fps
V04 32 blur nodes 24 fps
V05 64 blur nodes 12 fps
V06 01 NR 2 nodes 24 fps
V07 03 NR 2 nodes 17 fps
V08 06 NR 2 nodes 9 fps

So in the Blur nodes I seemed to get a bit more performance on the EVGA than you did. However with NR your Zotac's beat my GPUs. Very interesting.

What about this test:

Looks so GTX 580 is the best choice right now.

The conclusion is correct, the test itself does not go to much in depth.
Who used only three nodes ?
I designed this one to work with single CPU card solutions up to the biggest multi GPU system.
And you can run it yourself :)

I feel inadequate now :-)

Do the GTX 680's run with the standard Cubix power supply?

HaHa, that's kind of funny, someone must changed the project setting, unless that's a new feature of v.9?!
Anyway, the media file is actually 25fps, so I guess I'll need to rerun the test :)

The guy who loaded the project had changed the project to NTSC, so all the numbers are total BS :-(
Guess it's still true that you have to do everything yourself, or waste your time checking :-/

There's something funky with this system; Since I don't have the 24P test file I took the original and re-rendered it to 24P. But DaVinci still thinks it's 25P, and I don't have enough DaVinci knowledge to clear individual entries in database/prefs...

Anyway, I'm able to run the project in 25P, and here are the numbers:
V01 04 blur nodes 25 fps
V02 08 blur nodes 25 fps
V03 16 blur nodes 25 fps
V04 32 blur nodes 21.5 fps
V05 64 blur nodes 11 fps

Sascha, you are using 4 x GTX580 in Cubix, do you use Linux version to get all 4 GPUs running? Mac version is limited on 3 GPUs only.

Mac Pro 2x 2.4GHz Quad-Core Xeon
32GB RAM
Radeon HD 5770
Davinci Resolve 9.0.1 Lite (so noise reduction tests are meaningless)
V1 12fps
V2 7fps
V3 4fps
V4 2fps
V5 1fps
V6 24fps
V7 24fps
V8 24fps

Then I swapped the Radeon for a GTX570 HD (2.5GB PC version) and got this
V1 24fps
V2 19fps
V3 11fps
V4 6fps
V5 3fps
V6 24fps
V7 24fps

I've been using the Trial version of DaVinci Resolve 9 for benchmarking various GPUs for BareFeats.com. Since the Trial doesn't support Noise Reduction or Slaved GPUs, I'm using a single GPU to benchmark playback the first four Blur presets. (I set playback FPS to 300 so it will attempt to exceed the 24 FPS target.)

EVGA GeForce GTX 680 Mac Edition (2G GDDR5)
V01 04 blur nodes 43 fps
V02 08 blur nodes 25 fps
V03 16 blur nodes 14 fps
V04 32 blur nodes 7 fps

Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Mac Edition (3G GDDR5)

V02 08 blur nodes 25 fps
V03 16 blur nodes 15 fps
V04 32 blur nodes 8 fps
