I've been given footage with pretty harsh lighting. The subject matter has quite the opposite feel, so I was wondering if there was anything I could do in post to soften the lighting or the overall image without losing the sharpness.

Instant sex can help shots that needed a gaffer.
Dublicate the layer, darken (over darken) the top layer, decrease contrast as needed, maybe add some saturation. You wanna overdo all of this. Now blur it as desired... juuust a bit. Lastlym kae it's opacity 50 percent.. maybe 30 percent.
Hows that look?

On top of what Grinner said, there are things you can do with compositing modes.

I really like this easy demo by Chris "Ace" Gates, I refer back to it often because it is simple yet profound. Everything he does here is just done in the timeline, not in any other app.
