Books on StereoScopic Film/TV/Graphics and Animation production
by David Smith on Aug 25, 2009 at 12:01:58 pm

Hello All

I am based in London UK - I graduated from a Broadcast course a couple of years ago - so I am trying to keep up with new developments in the field and update my skill and knowledge in order to stay on the cutting edge and keep competitive. As if HD wasn't enough to grapple with - we now have 3D! lol

I am looking for books on the subject of stereoscopic production. I saw a few on Amazon but wasn't sure if they were right for me. What I need is like a manual with technical details. I am also presently at work on a vector based animation project but would like to be able to utilise stereoscopic 3D for this as it has great potential. So I would appreciate any advise for doing this with vector graphics (I use Flash).

Any and all recomendations and help much appreciated.

Thanks.

Your best bet is probably this one:

For pure theory, Lenny Lipton's is the textbook classic. I believe it is available online somewhere for free download.

You can find Lenny's book, "Foundations of the Stereographic Cinema," here.

You'll find a couple of other interesting books at that link, "Three-dimensional Photography," and "The World of 3D Movies."

An amazing guy, our boy Lenny. He founded the StereoGraphics Corporation 1980, which pretty much invented the display side of the business. It was bought by Real D a few years ago.

Lenny also wrote the lyrics to Puff the Magic Dragon!

And taught a hell of a lot of us how to make 16mm and super8 movies back in the seventies.

Agreed> The Super 8 Book (San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books. 1975) and Independent Film Making (San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books, 1972) are two classics. Although I doubt that he'll ever get around to updating these (especially the former), I haven't come across them free online yet, either...to be honest, not that I've looked....

Thank you very much to the both of you - I have downloaded the books you mentoned.
Well, I look forward to talking to you more and learning about this fascinating area. Incidentally,
does anyone know of any literature specifically about the graphics and animation side of all things 3D?
