Motion Graphics | Neat Video: Removing Noise and Grain from your Footage
In this video tutorial you will learn how to use the Neat Video plug-in for multiple applications. Although demonstrated in After Effects, the work-flow is essentially the same for all these applications: After Effects, Premiere Pro, Final Cut Pro, Motion, Nuke, Fusion, Vegas Pro, etc. This powerful but simple to use plug-in can clean up noisy footage by applying a sophisticated and advanced algorithm to work out what's noise and what's details in your footage and then remove just the noise. This is done by profiling the noise properties in an area of a video frame without visible features. Once the noise has been profiled, Neat Video is guided by this profile to reduce and eliminate noise while not touching the video details. Although mostly automatic, Neat Video still leaves you with total control over the amount of filtering you apply and even offers optional sharpening (without sharpening the noise) should you wish it.

I'm a big fan of the NeatVideo tool. I even use it as an effect sometimes on skin to soften it or eliminate skin pours.

I purchased neat a year or two ago and use it quite often... latest job was to clean up some B roll. Took a long time but looked great. Used in a national commercial..

Great tutorial to get started using Neat. I purchased the Pro version and have been pleased with the results, though would like to get to know the plug-in even more. In this tutorial you mention future ones. Is that the case? That would be great! THANKS!

Hi Kim
I am pleased you are happy with the Neat Video plug-in, it really works well! I am also pleased to tell you that more tutorials are on the way, we are planning a more advanced one in the next couple of weeks - so watch this space.
Kind regards

Does neat video work with Adobe Premiere Pro CS5?

Hi Robert
Yes it does - very well! In fact, we are planning an advanced tutorial in the next few weeks using pp cs5.
Hope this helps

Thanks Andrew. I hope you can address dealing with those images where Neat cannot detect a clear portion of the frame to sample. This happens to me quite often. (see clip attached). I look forward to your next tutorials!

Hi Kim
Just wanted to let you know that I am working on the profile tutorial this week and so it should be up soon. Also, I had a play with the image you put up and using one of the techniques I will demonstarte managed to get a good amount of filtering on the image even as a jpeg! :o) and that was without playing with the filters!!
In short, just because you get your base noise profile settings on one frame shouldn't stop you trying to improve it using other frames of the same piece of footage ...

Hi Kim
That is the main reason for the advanced tutorial - how to get good profiles from clips where the auto function doesn't work well.

Hi Kim
I uploaded what I hope will be the final version to the team for them to approve a couple of hours ago and then i will upload it to the Cow as soon as I get the go ahead. It is a long and detailed tutorial lasting about 27 - 28 mins!! I hope that's not too long!
It covers getting a great noise profile as well as sharpening with a couple of examples at the end.
I'll let you know as soon as I have it uploaded on the Cow and will ask them to put it up as soon as possible.

Hi Kim
I just wanted to let you know that the tutorial - probably split into 2 - have just been uploaded to the neat video website and not on the cow. So go to http://www.neatvideo.com and you should find it/them there. Let me know how you get on.
All the best

Hi Daniel
Thanks for your kind comment. Just so you know, if you go to the neat video website you will find a couple of advanced tutorials I've done that aren't on the cow. They show how to build noise profiles from difficult footage.
Thanks again

Hello. I would like to know how slower the rendering would be from a 1920x1080-framesize:1.0-24mbps-AVCHD-29.97fps video to the same settings, because I have used a noise reduction plugin and the rendering was about five times slower than without it. So I would like to know how much slower it is using this plugin and getting a precise reduction, doesnt matter the computer. As the rendering in 1080p is already very slow on my 8GB DDR2 Quadcore computer, I guess I wouldnt want something which would take much more time. Thanks.

Hi Daniel, I asked the team and got this reply for you:
The computer hardware (including processor model, memory speed,
etc.) in fact does matter. As well as the effects, filters and
codecs used in the project, and the host application too. It all
counts and there is no single answer to all cases.
In ideal circumstances, Neat Video v2.7 can render about
1920x1080 1-2 HD frames per second on a fast quadcore Intel
processor (there are faster and slower quadcore CPUs).
Neat Video's the top priority is the quality of noise reduction.
It takes time to do it right and achieve good quality.
We currently work on speeding up the processing and
expect good results later this year.
Hope this helps,
Neat Video

Hello Andrew,
Thanks for the reply.
In fact, I know that the computer hardware matters on time. But it doesnt matter to me what computer hardware you use, I wanted to know how many times (2x, 4x or so) just so I get an idea because I give importance to how slow it is going to be. I guess you understood, if not it's all fine.
But you gave me the information I needed: 1-2 frames per second of rendering.
I'm sorry because I'm kind of new on this - plugins can take a lot more time to render.
But thanks for the time. Thanks a lot.

hi Andrew,
How are you? Thank you for this succinct tutorial. I came to know from NeatVideo that their latest version (3.x) is capable of using both CPU and GPU for noise removal - so performance should be must faster.

Hi Nanda
Thanks for the post, it's great how Neat Video are producing ever better products, it's just a shame their website isn't more user friendly as I'm sure they'd sell more if it were!! Anyway, GPU acceleration is very welcome.

Just wondered if neat video is known to work better in after effects or in final cut for removing noise or do they perform identical in each application?

Hi Robert
I have sent your query directly to the Neat Video team so they can give you a direct answer. You should hear from the soon.

Hi again, here is the official word from Neat Video
Regarding quality of NV noise reduction in AE vs FCP, it is quite the same. It is really a matter of personal preference of one host application vs another. The plug-ins for AE and for FCP look, feel and perform quite the same way.
In other words, which application you want to use will give you the same results :o)
If you need to contact them directly use this link http://www.neatvideo.com/contacts.html
