Stabilizing and Match Moving Plates
by Elli Raynai on Oct 15, 2009 at 11:57:22 am

Hi Pete,

I'm having some trouble stabilizing and match moving two plates. One is my clean plate and one is my original footage. I have tracked both plates and set them both to stabilize and then I created a roto for the patch where I need to bring over the clean plate. My problem is that my clean patch is still moving ever so slightly and I don't know how to fix this. I have tracked both plates in the exact same place and have picked a point that is close to where I am doing the roto. Are there any tools in the tracker that I can use to help smooth out the shifting or do I need to just keep trying to find a better place to track on the plates?

Thanks Pete!

Hi Elli. Are you doing a 2 point track?

No, just a 1 point track

Hi Elli, the jitter is probably the slight rotation of the camera or possibly gate weave. Use a 2 point track or better yet a 4 point track.

Still not working with the 4 point track, I can get it stable and then their is a slight bit of shift at the end of the shot. Could it be which points I picked to track on the shot?

Hi Elli I noticed you said in your original post that you stabilized both the plates and the clean plates. You should only stabilize the clean plates and then match move the cleanplate to the plate.

I have to admit that I have been working on alot of tutorials and your last comment was completely my methodology, but when I showed my shot yesterday and I told them how I was trying to do it they told me to stabalize both plates and then reverse stabilize at the end of the script. Anyways, if we go your route, when I matchmove the non-clean plate, do I use a 4 point track to pick up the camera weave that I am getting or a 2 point track?

Hi Elli. The more points you track the better. Regarding stabilizing and inverting stabilization, my attitude is that the less you can do to a plate the better.
