dragging a layer
by kurt murphy on Nov 13, 2008 at 10:18:26 pm

Of the one billion things that drives me nuts about Chyron, this one gets me the most (along with 750,000 others): What's the easiest way to drag out a layer? I created a 30 second Effect In timeline, but when I added my camera to it, it only lasted 5 seconds. What's the easiest way to make a layer as long as the timeline or the easiest way to drag out a layer? When I drag it, it stops at the end of the timeline window (like 6 seconds). I have to move the timebar but still be able to see the layer that I want to drag out; THEN drag the layer a few more seconds... But sometimes (like, a lot) it snaps back to the beginning and I have to @!!??! start all over again. This thing is just on FRUSTRATING machine. How do other people do this without becoming homicidal?

thanks,

kurt murphy

I'm not sure what you're trying to do. But I think the easiest way to make a layer as long as the timeline in Lyric Pro 6.5 is:

1. With the layer already added to the timeline, Select the desired layer. Now right-click on the timebar & select "Modify Animation Length"

2. A window pops up asking for some settings. Enter the total time in length you need this layer to playout to (e.g. 00:00:30:00 will give you a 30 second timeline). Then Uncheck the Proportional Scaling. Then check "Scale Selected Objects" & click OK. This will increase your slected layer time to sync with your transition time length without interferring with any keyframes within that layer. If you keep the proportional scalling checked it'll stetch your keyframes which at times can be very frustrating when losing keyframes. I always save my keyframes just in case.

3. If this layer is an IN animation, be sure to check "Hold Last Frame" under Transition Proporties for this layer; otherwise, it'll dissappear at the end of your layer length.

NOTE: If this is a video layer, Chyron can only support each video layer to be exactly 30 seconds long & no longer; that's because of the 30-second TV spot standard.

Hope this answers some of your questions.

I think I figured out what you're trying to ask. This is actually a small glitch in Lyric Pro. Dragging the layer works only if you stay within its viewing range. If you drag a layer outside or too close to the timeline's end of window while holding the mouse & then letting go, it'll of course lose its state & your layer snaps back to beginning.

A workaround of this is to hold down the mouse while dragging/wiggling towards the end of window but stay within the timeline range window and then once you reach your desired mark, move the mouse back inside the timeline then let go of the mouse. You can now drag & extend a layer. Remember not to drag the layer passed its timeline range; otherwise, it'll snap back to beginning. If you need to move the slider further in your timeline, I would use the <> arrows but it's slower.

Good luck!

Mike,

Thanks for the answers, this helps... But this is what bugs me about Chyron. This should be a very easy thing to do, yet it's not. I wish there was a zoom OUT on the timeline so that I could drag a layer down. With most programs there's a 'sweet spot' that you hit that'll keep moving a layer; but with Chyron you have to try to wiggle.

I understand your frustration with Lyric.
Not sure if you know about the Right Click on the timeline's time (the area above the individual object timelines) this gives you the option to zoom the timeline.
Hope this helps.
