Check in makes FCS unusable
by Dustyn Gobler on Jul 7, 2009 at 1:16:40 am

My biggest problem with Final Cut Server is that when a user checks a project file back into FCS, that file also remains on the user's desktop. I think this is a major fault that renders FCS unusable in my opinion.

Does anyone know of a solution that deletes the file from the user's computer when it is checked back into FCServer?

To explain myself further:

1) User logs into FCS and checks out a final cut pro project.

2) Project file is copied onto the user's desktop.

3) User edits, makes changes and then checks project file back into FCS.

*But mentioned final cut pro project file also remains on the user's computer. This is what I want to get rid of.

Dustyn, I'm with you on this. I'm going to have students editing projects in a lab setting (not their own projects but global projects) and I foresee this as major problem number one.

First of all, don't let them put it on the Desktop. Mega-stupid place for anything (IMHO). I plan to set every editor up with a folder with their name on it and default that as their check in/out place. They will be responsible for deleting the things in their own folder. I know... still relies on user responsibility but at least it's less likely someone *else* will use the wrong FCP project. Also, of course, very simple, step-by-step instructions that include "check FCP project back in and DELETE the local copy"

I suspect there is a way to set up a full scan of the local machines but this seems potentially more dangerous than trusting the editors. Just make them clean up their own messes and I have found they soon learn not to make as many

Allynn
