Final Cut Server???
by Steve Cohen on Apr 18, 2008 at 11:17:16 pm

I know it just came out last week, but has anyone had any experience with it.

Walter seems to get his hands on everything before everyone else.

We are considering it for our house and wanted some feed back on it?

Thanks

[Steve Cohen] "Walter seems to get his hands on everything before everyone else."

Nope. Honestly have no interest in this at this time. Not even sure exactly what it is and how it would help in our three suite shop.

Sorry.

It's pretty slick actually, but apparently made for workflows where one guy is working in Motion (for example) and another is working in FCP on the same project. Also good for client online access to the material. Saw most of the demo at the supermeet, and it was working quite well for this sort of thing. It shares media, roundtrips between workstations and more... very slick. But for a one man shop? dunno... need more information to make a judgement there.

I played with it at NAB 2007 and fell in love immediately. We have an 8 station set up on XSAN, so we're really going to benefit greatly from this. All I can do now is read all of the literature - there is a pretty good amount of it on the website. However, I too, am hoping to see some real world feedback on it before we purchase it. My employer has gotten so big that it takes months of planning, budgeting, etc. to get things like this off the ground. It will be October before we have it in our hands and another three months to debug and deploy it.

Yes, Final Cut Server was the thing that I found the most interesting during the NAB 2007 presentation by Apple. It addressed many of the areas where -- at least for some users in the most demanding markets -- Final Cut has lacked features that support the kind of workgroup abilities that make Avid so entrenched.

Like you, Jeff, I am watching just about anything to do with Final Cut Server. It's going to be an interesting development, I am sure.

Good to see you out slumming in the COW. Hope all is well with you and yours down in Florida.

Yeah we have alot of the thing that they say it does implementeed already, but they don't work smoothly.

We are a 3 suite house with 2 other suites for digitizing and layback looking at adding another one for producers to do a real rough cut. Right now they just pull selects and we do it all edit.

Was wondering how it would work with a Non XSAN server, but I guess there is no info on that yet and Apple isn't going to say it works with anything besides their stuff.

Thanks for the input and will be looking forward to hearing anything else that anyone has to say about it.

We're looking long and hard at this as well. We're mainly a two suite shop - but we're currently working from separate ESATA raids at each workstation.

We're hoping to take advantage of the check in/check out, project management and metadata archiving capabilities without immediately upgrading to a SAN. Any opinions on whether that's... well, nuts?

Also, I'm assuming we'd need to purchase an XServe, since our current server is a Dell. Recommendations on configuring a server somewhat cheaply? (We have recently upgraded to new 8-core MacPros in the suites, so cash is at a premium.)
