FCS 1.5: folders within folders
by Toby Dalsgaard on Oct 30, 2009 at 7:08:39 pm

Anyone play with this yet?

So far I'm not too impressed. I'm actually thinking I must be doing something wrong, because the result of folder in folder hierarchy in the productions seems kinda pointless.

Right now, I have a production called TOYOTA COMMERCIAL and within that production I have 100's of VO's, GFX and MOV files. Ideally, I'd like to clean it up and create three folders...MOVS, GFX & VO's. It allows me to create folders, but when I drag the files to them, it doesn't move the original representation, but rather creates a second representation inside that folder. So NOW, when I open up the original TOYOTA production, I still have hundreds of assets littering the place up as well as "copies" of them within the respective folders. Am I missing something? What's the point??

I'd love to hear from someone else using 1.5.

I'm with you, I think this is a non-feature at this point. If they used a more intuitive interface, the control might make some sense. As it was implemented, I'm not seeing a big improvement over just adding metadata to match the folder name info. If you're missing something here, so am I. ;)

Toby:

If filesystem management and organization is what you're seeking from Final Cut Server (FCSvr), you'll need to look at leverage Script Responses within FCSvr.

With script responses you can for example have the creation of a new production spawn off the creation of a very organized file and folder hierarchy on your file system. You would take that further and have script create other production like Toyota Commercial_MOVs, GFXs, & VOs, then link them to the orginal production as sub productions.

You could go 1 step further and then script the creation of watcher and/or scans and have automatically assign any assets drop in certain folders to be automatically linked to a particular production.

With all this being said, FCSvr is very powerful, you just need speak to an experience consultant or integrator.

That's all just dandy, but I don't see where we didn't already have that capability - just without the control in the interface which, again, I think is all but useless. What you're talking about can be done through the use of the right metadata fields. I suppose this might simplify the scripting a bit, but just a bit. I already have a script that does what you're talking about, but on the back end. Linking it up with the db is what I'm lacking.
