Car hit effect

I saw on Andrew Kramer's web site - videocopilot.net on his demo reel a shot of him walking out onto the street and getting run over by a van. I was wanting to use that effect in my next film but have no idea how that is accomplished. I think it has something to do with masks but that's all I can figure. Any one know of a tutorial out there I can learn this technique or how it's done?

I haven't seen the specific example you're referring to, but I can tell you that it probably relies heavily on the action being quick. The subject is green-screened and keyed out, then animated to approximate the transfer of energy from the car to the person. You could probably get even more accurate results using the puppet tool in AE CS3 to bend the body as the impact occurs.

Tutorial, schmutorial.
• The subject runs out into the street, does whatever business the script calls for, then abruptly and quickly falls to the ground, legs & arms akimbo, and after a fashion, scampers out of the shot.
• While the camera still rolls, the vehicle passes through the shot.
• In After Effects, roto the vehicle passing through the shot. Sync up so it looks like the vehicle's knocking down the subject, which is on the layer below.
