No video out from Premiere Pro 2 on dual boot iMac
by Jeff Hough on Jul 10, 2008 at 2:19:41 am

I posted this question in the Premiere Pro forum and didn't get a response. I think maybe it was posted in the wrong forum.

Basically, I have a dual boot iMac which I set up through Boot Camp. I already had Premiere Pro 2, so I loaded it on the Windows XP partition. Everything works great except that I'm not getting any video out to my external video monitor through my camcorders (Canon GL2 or Panasonic PV-DV400) or my Sony DVMC-DA1 when they're hooked up to the firewire 400 port. I can capture from these devices without any problems, but I just can't get any video to output back to them.

I decided to go the Mac based dual boot route based on Tim Wilson's recent article about how great Windows ran on a Mac. I thought it would be great to have both platforms on one great machine. Aside from this issue, I've been very happy.

Has anyone else successfully run a similar setup and been able to output video? I'm assuming I'm having some sort of hardware or driver issue, since Vegas is having the same problem. Would resetting the 1394 settings in the registry help? I'm not exactly sure how to do that, but I'll try it if it will help.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hmmmm....

You've gotten this working on other PCs before?

Hi Tim,

Thanks for the response.

Yes, I've had this working on other PCs. I had it working on my Dell workstation at home up until I transfered everything over to the iMac two weeks ago. And I also have it working with other higher end Canon DV and HDV camcorders, and Sony DV and HDV decks at Arizona State University where I work by day. The systems at work are higher end multi-processor IBM and Dell workstations. My Dell workstation at home was just a single processor system.

When I experienced this "no video out" problem with the iMac, I grabbed my external drive and Canon GL2 and hooked it back up to my older Dell workstation. I re-installed Premiere Pro 2 on it, and was able to get everything working normal, including video out through the GL2 to an external monitor. Vegas was also giving me video out through the same setup.

After I finished the project, I moved everything back to the iMac, and I'm still having the same problem with both Premiere Pro 2 and Vegas. I'm assuming it's not a software issue since I'm having the same problem with both Premiere Pro 2 and Vegas. I just can't figure out it it's a hardware issue with the firewire 400 port, or if there is something messed up with the Windows XP Pro install. Or maybe some sort of driver issue. I'm willing to re-install the XP operating system if I need to in order to fix this issue. As I said before, I can capture just fine off of any firewire device I hook up to the iMac, with complete device control. I just can't run video back out through them. Very frustrating.

Do you know of others that are using a similar setup and are having success? Is this something that should be working the way I expect, or should I expect quirks like this because it's a Mac and not a PC? I hope not, because I really like this new iMac.

Again, thanks for responding. I'm not in the middle of a project on this system right now, so I have some flexibility and time to try and figure out what's going on.

Regards,

Jeff

I'm afraid I don't have a camera, but I haven't had any experiences of hardware behaving differently because of Mac drivers.

Can you get the video to work with other software applications? I understand that you probably don't have a bunch of NLEs laying piled up in the corner, but this really ought to be working....

I feel exactly the same way. It ought to be working.

I also have Sony Vegas loaded up on the iMac, and it has the same problem. When I click the icon to route the signal to an external device, it doesn't give me anything. I hear the audio from the computer, and then it hangs.

I'm not sure if it's worth contacting Microsoft and asking them if they know of any driver or hardware issues when running Windows XP on one of the new 24" iMacs. Just the thought of trying to work it through with someone there frustrates me. I'm also afraid they'll just take the easy way out and blame it on the fact that it's a Mac. I talked with Apple tech support (someone in India), and they blamed it on Microsoft.

The fact that it's partially working in Windows XP (for capture) just makes it more difficult to figure out. I don't have any NLE software for the Mac OS, so I can't test if the output works in that environment. Do you know of any free trial versions of FCP or anything else that I could try for Mac?

Again, thanks for working with me on this. Maybe an idea will eventually pop up.

Jeff

That's it in a nutshell. I wish I had more hope to offer on that front.

I suggest trying Premiere on Mac rather than FCP. There's no free trial for FCP, but more important, you don't need to throw in a bunch of new issues -- like figuring out WHERE to configure FCP to do what you need, much less HOW -- while you're trying to do basic troubleshooting.

I mean basic as "you NEED this" rather than basic as "dude, this is child's play." It's clearly anything but. I'm just saying that you'll keep oriented more easily if you're already familiar with the software....

That sounds like a good idea Tim. I'll look for a trial download of Premiere Pro CS3 for Mac and see what results I get with that. I suppose if I have similar issues in the Mac environment, then that would indicate a possible problem with the built in firewire hardware.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll update as soon as I have more information.

OK, I downloaded the Mac trial version of Premiere Pro CS3, installed it, and checked it out. After I captured a few sample clips, I was instantly able to see video playback on my external video monitor through my Canon GL2. So it looks like the built in firewire hardware is OK.

It looks like I'm going to have to keep digging on this, or try reloading XP maybe. I really want to get the Windows version of the CS3 production bundle so I'm compatible with everything at work, which is all Windows based. I also have to say that I didn't think that the Mac version was as responsive as the Windows version of Premiere Pro CS3.

Thanks again Tim for the suggestion to download the trial version of PP3 CS3 for Mac. At least it helped me narrow things down a little.

Just an update to this post...

I've given up for the time being on trying to get an external display to work in the Windows XP environment. I went ahead and purchased the CS3 Production Premium bundle for Mac. Everything is working fine with it. Before I bought it, I did some experimenting and discovered I can go back and forth between the Mac environment and Windows XP with my Premiere Pro CS3 projects. So, I'm able to work on projects between home (Mac version) and the office (Windows XP version) without any problems. I just have to do a quick file find and let the waveform previews rebuild. I'm using Paragon's NTFS for Mac so I can use the same Western Digital 1 TB drive between my Windows XP and Mac computers.
