As for the cheap thing, search for OEM versions of Vista Ultimate. (I recommend Ultimate.)
Plus:
==Very, very inexpensive.
==The full versions, nothing missing.
==100% legal, as per MSFT. I can find a link if you're not sure.
Minus:
==No support. You're supposed to get OEM software from the system builder -- which, as soon as you buy OEM software, is YOU. It'll never hurt you to ask, but don't count on it. Although really, when was the last time you needed OS-level support from ANYBODY? I've been computing since 1980, and I'm not sure. Once? Twice?
==No upgrades. Ever. Patches, yes. But that's it.
EXTREMELY limited to one motherboard. Not just one computer. So if your motherboard needs to be replaced, you need to buy a new copy.
==And yeah. One computer. Ever.
The fact is that the only motherboards I've lost were on the first generation of Titanium Powerbooks (mac), and those are long, long gone.
So if you can live with no upgrades, no transfers and no OS support, OEM software is a nifty and legal way to save a couple of hundred clams.
