Cross platform nightmare
by Steve Garman (audioeditor) on Apr 3, 2008 at 10:09:47 pm

I hate this crazy world of portable and external hard drives! I can read a Mac EXT-HD on my G5 running OSX-10.49,
but if I hook a Windows NTFS portable hard drive up to the G5 It mounts and is readable but it says "read only" in its "get info" tab. The same drive on Windows XP says it is completely open to everyone, but on the G5 it says "ead only."

I'm thinking the Mac says that because it can't write to NTFS anyway so it just throws up a smoke screen of saying the drive is read only. More and more jobs are coming in like today--a portable Mac drive with data the client wants on a windows drive. I can read the Mac drive and move it to my Mac raid but no way is the Mac going to let me move it to a NTFS drive.

I wind up having to go through our network which takes longer than a turtle crawling to the Olympics from Cleveland! Help!

Someone mentioned software called Paragon NTFS that allows you to read and write to NTFS partitions from Mac OSX. You might want to check into it.

I just purchased the paragon software stuff, and it works perfectly.

And if you use Macdrive on the windows side and make the Mac drive shareable on the network, any other windows computer on the network can access it as well.

There is a freeware add on to OSX that allows you to read and write on NTFS disks (the program defines the partition as a server). Cant remember what it's called but I found after some searching on google. You have to install a series of application enhancers for it to work but it's great.

Well, you talked me into it. Paragon NTFS works well, except I still can't read NTFS firewire drives. Any ideas on that front?

NTFS for Mac can read FW drives, just like any other NTFS volume. (I checked their website just to be sure.)

Have you seen issues with any other volumes? For example, have you tried another external drive? USB? Local partitions?

Not that I have any idea if any of those will be any different...all part of the troubleshooting process....

There is a freeware alternative to Paragon NTFS, it`s called NTFS-3G with MacFuse. But as it treats NTFS drives as network drives, it`s not nearly as fast as a native drive.

I had bad luck with Paragon NTFS, it basically destroyed some of my files, which just began to disappear. Finally, the whole partition was empty. Drive info told me that the space is still occupied, but I couldn`t see or open any of the files. I was finally able to recover some of them with recovery software, but I for myself cannot recommend paragon, as it is unathorized, hacked implementation of NTFS protocol.
