How do I select just part of my art?

In this pie chart, I want to select just the first section of the pie slice, before it's bisected by the circle, in order to fill it. But it keeps selecting the entire wedge. How do I select just the first section?

Sounds like you might be using the Selection tool. You need to use the Direct Select tool. It's the second "arrow" pointer down in most toolbars.
