Opening photos in Photoshop - Long time problem

Hi, I have a long lived problem here. Whenever I open a photo taken with a digitial camera into Photoshop, the quality is not as good as it should be. I also get better quality prints using Epson software than Photoshop - surely this can't be right?????

Am I not doing something I should be or has anybody else had this problem?
