I've never used a RED, but considering bumping up to that level over this next year. I have two questions:

1. Are the RED sensors, including the new ones (EPIC and SCARLET) CMOS sensors?

2. If they are CMOS sensors, do they suffer from the same vertical skew that vDSLRs suffer from?

They are CMOS, and they suffer from rolling shutter, but not like the Canon 5D.

The effect is about half as bad on the older sensor and should be again half as bad than those on the newer sensors, getting close to the effect on analog cameras with a rotating shutter.

Funny you say that about analog cameras. I'm working on a documentary and some of the archive footage was shot on Hi-8. I noticed the vertical line skew, or swish. I thought to myself, "those cameras 17 years ago didn't have CMOS sensors, did they?"

Thanks for the info.

I was referring to mechanical devices, like an ARRI 35mm…

Sorry for the confusion!

FYI, both CCD and CMOS type chips can have either global or rolling shutter. It's not tied that CMOS is always rolling and CCD always global.

What it comes down to is how fast the sensor can read / reset. This read / rest time is much lower on Mysterium sensor the HD-DSLRs, even lower on Mysterium-X and lower still on Epic. In other words, the effect is utterly negligible.

Isn't Epic using the same sensor as the MX?

Same sensor, but faster more powerful surrounding electronics.
