Working Scarlet a "no show" at NAB

I had my hopes up and traveled to NAB to see and (hopefully) hold a fully realized and working version of the SCARLET but instead found some un working Scarlet "brains"secured under glass and unconfigured along with a fixed lens model. It seems that RED is putting all its energy and future into the EPIC with its "future proof" 4k and 5K features. I listened to the packed presentation about how 2k is so yesterday and how filmmakers and studios must future proof with 5k masters. So much for waiting on an inexpensive camera from RED. The CANON 5D seems like it had all the mojo this years NAB, the CANON's presentation was impressive.

A lot of the electronics development for Epic flows over into getting Scarlet ready and working. In some ways Scarlet is a bit more complex with it's built-in lens, so there are strong reasons why priority is getting Epic out, and then using that to quickly finish the Scarlet development.

Why would you get your hopes up for Scarlet when RED have expressly stated no Scarlet until Epic is done? Always amazes me when people don't listen.

Well...that sounds like the two years leading up to the RED ONE to me. I can remember standing in cab and lunch lines at two NABs talking with people who were of similar mindset (not working at McDonald's necessarily, but waiting to do a project until the camera came out...some for two years.)

Quite a statement about the impression this company has made on the industry I'd say, but I'd have to agree with BobZ (as I typically do).

I always perceived the philosophy behind RED to be to reset the price/performance standard to make digital cinematography tools available to more users than ever before and diminish the influence of the costs and logistics of technology on the creative process.

It does seem that many are now more technology-focused than ever before...

Are you responding to me or the original poster? If it's not me, then ignore my response...

I said that by the time Canon does a SERIOUS update, Scarlet will hopefully be out. I don't feel like explaining what a serious update would entail, the shortcomings of the Canon are obvious anyway, and it's not something a firmware update's going to fix.

All in all that means a decent chunk of time from now. 6 months sound reasonable? I don't think it's ridiculous to think that the 2/3" will be out by then because everyone's saying the Epic is finishing up, but I do think it's ridiculous that people thought Scarlet would be ready by NAB.

Agreed about Bob waiting for Scarlet...

I have a feature I want to shoot, and it looks like it will be shot on the 5D.

If I have any money left by the time Scarlet S53 comes out, I'll consider getting it.
