Mocha Squeezing Image
by Daniel Elder on Nov 5, 2009 at 11:47:27 pm

I have done a successful track in Mocha, I'm tracking a vertical screen in Time Square, it's more or less 9x16 aspect ratio. So I'm taking two 720P HD clips, I've tracked my data in the footage, and then pasted that tracking info onto my new clip, and if I have it as just footage it squeezes it, if I have it comped it still squeezes it, I'm not sure how to do this, but I want the verticle image to be cropped to match the 9x16 screen, and then be able to pan scan the comp within the screen... do you understand?

Hi Daniel,

A corner pin works by moving the corners of your clip to the corners of the surface, so there will always be a distortion unless your clip is already the correct aspect ratio. You need to do the cropping and pan-scan before the corner pin.

Which app are you using the data in? After Effects, FCP or something else? If you let me know I can give you some pointers on how to get the result you're looking for.

I am using After Effects, I did some tests by making the Comp 9x 16, but making more like 9 x 20 or so, and it's getting close, and then within the comp I'll be able to move the footage back and forth, like a Pan Scan. At least that's how I think I'll be doing it. Does that sound right?

Thanks

OK, you're slightly restricted in how the AE Corner Pin effect works, but you can get the right result. If you have Red Giant Warp, you can achieve this without the Comp 2 step.

First make a new comp that has the same dimensions as the vertical screen. Drop in your footage and do the pan/scan here to select the right region. Let's call this Comp 1.

Now create a new comp that's the same size as the full frame (720p in your case), call it Comp 2. Drop Comp 1 in here, right-click it and choose Transform | Fit to Comp. What you should now see is the pan/scan region stretched to fill the whole frame.

Now drop Comp 2 into your main comp, and apply the corner pin effect to it. You should see it appear in the correct place at the correct scale.

I think I figured it out for the most part, but I just set up my Main comp, then had the comp that had the vertical screen and was able to figure out that the comp setting was about 1.83 to 1 so a typical movie screen setting. So I went into Photoshop and set up a comp with that aspect ratio, and flipped it vertical. Brought that into the main comp, and then did my pan scan as I needed. It seemed to have worked almost how I wanted it to, so thanks for the help.
