eSATA speeds!
by Stever on Jan 3, 2008 at 1:13:12 am

Is eSATA a fast enough conduit to edit HD with? Not HDV, but full res HD. From what I have looked at I should be able to put a pci card in my G5, plug an eSATA drive array in to it and edit away. Am I not reading the specs right?

Looks like Dulce Systems and CalDigit are doing good things with eSATA setups and full uncompressed HD.

Hi Stever, eSATA as an interface has the bandwidth to support HD uncompressed, even 10-bit which is about 160MB/sec plus some margin so say 200MB/sec.

In addition, the number of disk drives plays into this equation. You will need enough drives to fill the eSATA conduit. A five drive setup fills this bill nicely. This provides HD capable speed from empty to full. Fewer drives will only provide sufficient speed only with an empty array, when it gets full it starts to drop.

Dulce's HD Commander fills this combination, check here: http://www.dulcesystems.com/html/hd_commander.html.
