I'm so excited a forum like is available! It seems I always have tape questions, but really nowhere to turn for pointed, knowledgeable answers. First question, what are the main differences between HDCAM and HDCAM SR? I know one is more expensive than the other, indicating that there are probably some quality differences, but what are they exactly?

Hi Betty,
The biggest difference between HDCAM and HDCAM SR is the amount of information each format holds. HDCAM records at 3:1:1 at a resolution of 1440x1080 while HDCAM SR records virtually all the information the image sensor can throw at it at 4:4:4 and full 1920x1080 HD resolution.

As a result, the HDCAM SR format records nearly 3 times as much information as the HDCAM format. This requires HDCAM SR to have 50% smaller metal particles making up the tape in order to fit in that extra data.

[Cale Mooth] "HDCAM SR records virtually all the information the image sensor can throw at it at 4:4:4 and full 1920x1080 HD resolution.

As a result, the HDCAM SR format records nearly 3 times as much information as the HDCAM format."

HDcamSR has two data rates, most applications use the 440 Mbit/s mode, while you can utilize the 880 Mbit/s mode via dual link SDI...HDcamSR can also record in Y'CbCr or RGB (4:4:4 would be used with RGB recording).

HDcam is 1440x1080 at color subsampling of 3:1:1 as Cale said, with a bit rate of 135 Mbits/s.

HDcam is also limited to 8 bits of palette precision (linear) while HDcamSR can record 10 bit log.

Here is HDCAM SR explained. It is a newer high density tape.
