Archiving video
by hiram Naman (Hiram Naman) on Oct 18, 2007 at 8:16:46 am

Hi,

We want to offer our clients a video archiving service whereas we would digitize all their commercials from VHS, Umatic, Betacam, Digibeta and later on HD.
Now we need a safe disk storage system for this job.
What would you recommend? We would start with 20TB and grow.

Thanks

If you're going with a hard drive based solution you definitely want to go with some type of RAID configuration in order to have some data redundancy when the inevitable happens and one of those drives fail. I would also suggest backing up your large drive away to something less mechanically prone such as data tape or video tape. Always have some type of backup!

IMHO, 20tb of disk archive is a catastrophe waiting to happen. another issue is, if you want to have any redundancy protection on 20tb, you will need 25%+ or more of disk space.
if i were you, i would look into a 'near-line' tape library consisting of lto-4 (800gb per tape) tapes.
but seriously, as enticing as it sounds, having all you clips digitized on hard drives is...risky.
