David FalckSony Vegas 12: Render As -> "An error occurred while creating the media file . Exception thrown by method called"

Today something weird started happening with Vegas 12. I was mucking about in my recent project and when I finished I pressed "Render As" and then this error came up:

An error occurred while creating the media file . Exception thrown by method called

It's been around 2 months since I installed Windows 8. Vegas has been working flawlessly until now.
I tried rendering different projects (both empty and with media files), restarting and reinstalling Vegas but the error still came up. Then I tried Ctrl + M (which means Render To New Track) and then this error came up:

An error occurred during the current operation. An exception was thrown by a type's initializer (.cctor).

I also Googled on the first error (the second one didn't give any good results) and came to the conclusion that it might be the K-Lite Codec pack I had installed MONTHS ago. I tried uninstalling the pack and removing it from the registry as well but no dice.
Some users had said that only reinstalling Windows helped. So I tried Windows 8's Refresh; and it worked!
I carefully selected programs I wanted to install using ninite.com - and I accidentally selected MPC with decoders (included were MPC). After installing everything Vegas no longer worked, same error.

So I did a second reformat, went to MPC's website and installed it without K-Lite (I presume the installer doesn't install codecs, since it didn't give any information on it or anything). Vegas 12 still worked. I preceded to install various Adobe software (Photoshop, Audition, Premiere, After Effects, Media Encoder, Illustrator, Lightroom), DayZ Commander, Mumble (1.2.4 beta), Fraps and other software I'm not completely sure of.

I rendered my project again. I opened the file and then I noticed there were some black frames in the clip. I re-rendered everything but it got worse. Blacks frames to and fro, glitching and other shit.
Then I tried a third time. The error came back.

Now, to recap, I have not installed any codecs; only drivers and various software (there's a full list below). What the HELL is going on? I'm beginning to speculate it's Windows Update doing some hidden updates, but I doubt that's even possible.

Why do you have so much software and stuff installed on your
system David?, you bound to have conflicts.
And lastly Windows 8 is a new OS, and is something i dont recommend
in upgrading to just yet, for Professional Editors.
Sorry, dont know where to help you in that maze.

What? 19 programs isn't a lot, at all.

My home desktop is my editing machine as well; I don't have a dedicated one. That should be the answer to your question.

[David Falck] "Fraps and other software I'm not completely sure of."
I ansered your other duplicate post as well. If you are installing things that you're "not completely sure of"... stop doing that. It looks like it all worked until this step. Just install the programs that you NEED and stop installing things that you are not sure about. No one can tell you what's causing it but your tests seem to indicate that something you installed after the last time you checked Vegas is the cause.

Thing is; it's stuff that I've always had. Why should Vegas stop working now and not two months ago when I had the same software installed?
And "other stuff i'm not sure of" was worded wrongly. I know very well what I've been installing but I don't see how it would be relevant to my problem, as it's programs I've ALWAYS had before and Vegas worked correctly.

Yesterday I did a system restore back to before I installed MPC. Vegas worked fine, but to be sure I reinstalled Vegas without trial, reinstalled MPC and Foobar2000. Still worked.
Then, after I've been using Foobar2000 for around 10 minutes, Vegas started freaking out. That black-frame, spazzing/glitching out thingy came back whenever I rendered a movie. And for the third time I did it; the error came back.

I'm going to do another reformat and then keep a complete log on what I install on what date/time. Hopefully I'll find what's causing it that way.

The important thing is to test after every piece of software that you install. Once it breaks, the last thing you installed was most likely the cause. Good luck.

I'm not sure why you feel the need for MPC and Foobar2000 but the media players are definitely suspect. If you want one media player that plays everything just use VLC.

I'm sorry but VLC is not feasible when it comes to both things. Foobar2000 is a lot better for music and MPC is a lot better for movies, simple as that. Both programs are more customizable and stable than VLC.
But I'm keeping log and so far Vegas works with foobar2000 installed. Right now I am also installing Photoshop and Illustrator CS6, will see if they are causing anything.

Hmmm, I tried opening my old project from before the reformat. It says "An error occurred while loading file test.veg. An error occurred while opening a codec."
I can however open other old projects. This "test.veg" project is the one that I first experienced the error with.

[David Falck] ""An error occurred while loading file test.veg. An error occurred while opening a codec.""
This is at least a useful error. What codecs are used by the files in test.veg? It sounds like one of those is your problem.

How do I find out what codecs the file is using? It's a Vegas project after all.

Drop the source files into GSpot or MediaInfo and see what codes they use. It has nothing to do with Vegas; codecs get installed in your operating system.

It's only 6 png images and one fraps file, which I don't have anymore. I guess Vegas thinks I do have the Fraps clip left, and it needs the Fraps codec to view it, or something.

I think you found the problem. If you have a Fraps file in the project and you no longer have the Fraps codec installed, you now know why you got a "An error occurred while opening a codec.". You need to install Fraps if you ever plan on opening that project again.

Like I anticipated; MediaInfo and GSpot only recognizes certain filetypes; not Vegas projects. GSpot and MediaInfo doesn't show any info besides the size. Mind explaining how I check for codecs on a Vegas project file (.veg)?

You can't check the project file itself, sorry if that wasn't clear. You have to scan the media files that you use in your project to see what codecs they use.

Yeah, figured it would work out. So far I've got

µTorrent
Adobe Air
Adobe CS6
Adobe Flash Player 11 Plugin
Asus Xonar D1 Audio (audio driver)
Foobar2000 v1.2.1
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable
Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable (x64)
Mozilla Firefox 18.0
Mumble 1.2.4
Nvidia Graphics Driver 306.97
OpenAL
Vegas Pro 12.0 (64-bit, build 394)
Windows Essentials 2012 (Only Messenger)

Vegas is still working. I've also been launching Steam from my (E:) harddrive and playing some games - Vegas is still working.

Regarding the Vegas project file - what program should I scan it with to see what codecs it's using? GSpot?

There is no problem with µTorrent itself. It's what it has the potential to download that's the problem. ;-)

What exactly are you insinuating? If you are worried about me infecting the computer then I can say that any idiot who uses bittorrenting is bound to have the computer ridden with viruses; but I am not an idiot. I carefully select and choose,as well as scan the files whenever I download something.

[David Falck] "What exactly are you insinuating? If you are worried about me infecting the computer then I can say that any idiot who uses bittorrenting is bound to have the computer ridden with viruses; but I am not an idiot."
It has nothing to do with your IQ. The most intelligent person in the world can get infected by a virus or malware or keylogger by peer-to-peer sharing. 0-day means nothing is going to detect it. The virus really doesn't care how smart you are.

Also, one of the favorite places to place a virus is in a codec installer. You tell someone you have a great movie and it needs this new codec and you place the virus in the codec installer and they happily install it. It's the perfect storm and that's the problem; you don't have to be an idiot anymore. The new trick is to make someone very smart who knows better than to click on an email attachment do something that they normally would do, but make it dangerous.

I'm sorry if you think that peer-to-peer sharing is safe or that somehow you can keep it safe but you can't. It's just a matter of time before someone outsmarts you and then you have no idea what is really on your computer. I'm not judging you as a person, I'm just pointing it out that your actions may have consequences.

John said to scan with gspot or mediainfo the media that the veg file references, not the veg file. All that the veg file contains is pointers to media files and your editing steps from the timeline.

By the way, exception errors are almost always driver problems.

NEVER EVER install a codec pack - especially K-Lite. They usually replace the otherwise quality codecs installed by Vegas with very inferior or defective ones. Codec packs are for gamers, for playback. They tend to do a crappy job of encoding.

Sorry for my attitude - I was merely frustrated and needed to finish up a project before the 14th. Steve, I haven't been back here since because I've been busy with school, but I very much appreciate the help I've been given. To seem ungrateful is that last thing I want to be!

When it came to P2P our experience differs and let's just leave it at that, like Rofrano wanted to in the first place anyway.

But thanks again!

But to update on my Vegas 12 status. Rendering is still working fine. I've been keeping a log and installed various Windows updates, Quicktime 7, DirectX, etc - anything that I use on a regular basis (except Quicktime, I only use that for the codecs required on Vegas).
As soon as I install anything, I log it with time & date. I've yet to install MPC, but I miss it. VLC just doesn't sit right with me. :)

You might want to perform daily incremental backups. I use Acronis True Image to make a complete backup of my C: drive to a folder on my D: drive at the start of each month. Then I have it perform a daily incremental backup which only takes about 5 - 10 minutes each morning. I can go back to any day in the last month and I keep 3 months of backups on an off-line drive.
