 | Sony Vegas 11 crashes computer when rendering
by Chris Standring on Nov 2, 2012 at 4:23:55 am |
I know this seems to be an age old problem with so many users but I'm damned if I can find a fix for this. I am running Windows 7, 8 gigs of ram, 64 bit version of Vegas, version 11. I've tried reducing dynamic ram. Tried reducing max number of threads. Every time I render a file, no matter how small, it crashes my computer after around 20%.
I don't think it's a heat issue. The computer stays active all day with other programs. Can't be a ram issue, it works fine with everything else. I even re-installed Vegas. Same problem.
Tearing my hair out here. Someone please help. Thanks.

Rendering out video is by far the BIGGEST single test of any PC setup that will also test your workflow. That, and trying to get sensible frame rates that are above 50% of what you'd expect.
SO:-
Q1] What are you rendering FROM? That'll be the Media on your Timeline.
Q2] What are you rendering TO? That'll be your Rendering template.
Q3] Do your Project Settings match ALL of your Media on the Timeline? If not why not?
Q4] If you have still images, what format and how big?
Q5] What Format Audio do you have? This should be very low on the list of checks, but you never know.
Q6] How much Hard Disc space have you got? Are you rendering to the System Drive? Is your Media on a separate drive to your System?
Q7] What mix of FXing and Nesting do you have going on?
As you have not said any of this in your post, I can't infer whether you have checked these items or not.
Cheers

Q1) The media on my timeline is HD (.mts files from a Canon Vixia HF M52)
Q2) I am rendering to .MP4 (720p) although the same thing happens with .avi and I suspect other templates.
Q3) I am using default settings
Q4) No images on this timeline.
Q5) .wav audio file
Q6) 36.8 gb free on drive C, 404gb free on drive E, 81.7 gb free on drive F, 251 gb free on drive Z
I have been rendering to drive C and I just tried rendering to my F drive and the same thing happened. I also just rendered to my external G drive and it also crashed the computer at 50%. My media is on my F drive.
Q7) I am using 1 plugin, a little brightness and contrast. The movie I am rendering is just under 6 minutes long.
The computer should be able to handle this. Could this be a registry issue? I am at a loss.

Have you tried other media for source rather from that camera? We need to narrow this down some. It looked like two months ago you did render something after clearing the temp files. Failing at 20-50% could even be a power management function where the system is inadvertently turning off some devices when it thinks they are not in use. The other thing if it is related to just mts files, could be the codec registered on your system. Reinstalling Vegas does not correct codecs installed by other applications. I had a problem when I installed Adobe Photoshop Elements and it registered its codec as the preferred one. That worked fine until I uninstalled Photoshop Elements and it left the codec registered but removed the codec itself.
I used the CodecTweakTool to see where the problem was.

I just ran the codec tweak and it found a few unused files, asked me to delete them , which I did. I just tried rendering again and the computer crashed at 50% once again. I wonder whether I shouldn't format my hard drive and re-install windows 7. I only have a couple of programs I use on that computer. I run Sonar X1 (D.A.W.) and Vegas. I have one or two other things but I can re-install. Wouldn't be the end of the world. I worry that this is a Vegas issue though. And regarding the .mts files, I just can't believe Vegas is suffering with me importing those files. Pretty standard I would think.

Actually thinking about it, I would rather not re-install windows 7. This as it turns out would be a huge nightmare. I'd like to find a fix if possible.

Trying other media source types was a way to narrow this down. I have rendered mts files with SVP 11 64bit on Windows 7 just fine from my Panasonic TM900 camcorder.
Windows Version:7 64-bit
RAM:12gb
Processor:icore 7 970 3.2GHz x 6 cores
Video Card:Nvidia GTX 570 driver version 310.33
Sound Card:Realtek integrated 6.0.1.6037
Video Capture:IEEE1394
CD Burner:
DVD Burner:Samsung SH-S203N ATA and HP bd340 (Bluray burner)
Camera:Panasonic HDC-TM900 1080/60p SDXC 64GB Class 10
Add. Comments:P6X58D-E Coolmaster 800W PS Gold rated I used the IEEE1394 only when I need to capture miniDV tape

I just made a new session. I just tried importing a .mpeg file into a new timeline with a .wav audio file. rendered and it too crashed at 30%. So this tells me that the file type doesn't matter. Where do I go from here?

Open the PC and see if you are getting overheating from Dust in and around any air vents or fans. PLUS you could have a failing PSU. I've had both, rendering found them out for me!

Look in the follow directory on the system and see if the log files have any errors that point you in the right direction.
"C:/Users/(your login name)/AppData/Local/Sony/Vegas Pro/11.0/"
Is there any information for the crash, some dialog or does it just hang?
I have also configured my antitvirus software to exclude my source media folders.
What build of SVP 11 are you using? Is it 701?

Every time I render a file, no matter how small, it crashes my computer after around 20%.
You don't say how the crash is presented. Does the PC freeze? Does it reboot?, Do you get an error message?
I don't think it's a heat issue. The computer stays active all day with other programs. Can't be a ram issue, it works fine with everything else.
Does the encode ("Render As") fail at exactly the same point, or approximately? If it's the same place every time, then you likely have a problem in the media.
Yes, it can be heat. Few other programs are as processor intensive as video encoding. Find "prime95" and run that for a couple of hours. It is used be overclockers to stress their CPUs. You're not overclocking, are you?
Yes, it can be RAM. Few programs use as much system RAM as encoding video does. Find and run "memtest" overnight to test every bit of every RAM module you have installed.

Well I found the problem. It was heat after all. I cleaned out the box. It was dusty as hell. Tried a render and it got to 100% with no problems. Thankyou to all for being so helpful and so quick to respond.

[Chris Standring] "Well I found the problem. It was heat after all."
Yeah, when I posted my series of "Checks" and after that I read you had issues at various percentages % of completion, the fact that the target was wondering about, got me to my next check and that was anything mechanical impinging on your process. What was next, for me, was HEAT! Hence my invitation for you to look inside the box. What would have been good for you to understand just how much this was, to run a Temp program to ascertain just how much heat your PC was generating PRIOR to cleaning and then AFTER cleaning. That would have been edifying to know.
Rendering is a severely CPU and other component-stressing procedure. If your PC is a bit under par/spec, here I mean ready to handle rendering, then rendering WILL make your PC scream back at you. And it did!
I'm real glad you didn't reinstall WIN7. Now knowing that it was a heat issue, or rather a reduction of an adequate ventilation system issue, you would have STILL had the same fail, and that after maybe a full morning or day even of fut-zing around with a reinstall, when a blow-out, brush or whatever cured the day.
I hope you continue with this issue rearing its head for the foreseeable future. I regularly open the box once every 6 months to have a look-see and a cursory clean, Springtime or not.
Cheers
