Multi-layered video effects

Hi,
I am making an animation video. I would like to layer characters from one scene, onto a different scene so that it looks like they are originally in the scene. This guy does it heaps:
How can I layer a character onto a scene?
Any help would be awesome. or even link me a tutorial. I'm struggling to find one on youtube.

Hmm...
If you are referring to 1:14, then that is purely a graphic with a transparent background around the man. Transparent information is stored in what's called the "Alpha" channel. If you have graphics that make use of Alpha channels - I use PNGs - then you'd be good to go. Now, that's the purely Transparent background taken care of.
The "other" instances of where individuals are being seen "overlaid" , from what I can make out are purely cross fades.

oh really? great, thanks for that Graham. Just to clarify, at 0:14, when the man with the blue hair comes in at the right hand corner, is that still a cross fade?
Appreciate the help, as I'm sure everyone else does too.
