new laptop i7-2670QM & NVidia GeForce GTX 670M video card, 16 gigs ram

I just installed Vegas 11 build 683 64 bit onto new laptop.

Strange thing is when I drop MXF files from either Cannon XF105 or XF305 or Nanoflash, the files shows up as audio only files - no video.

If I render on another computer and bring back to this computer everything is fine. Is there a setting I am missing?

Thanks for your insights. I can't seem to figure this one out. James

Install the 32 bit version of Pro 11 and see if that helps.

I installed the 32 bit as you recommended. Strange thing is that on some of the MXF the video and audio showed on the timeline correctly. Not all files but some.

Later when I tried using the 32 bit program, after rebooting the computer it did not show the video portion - was again like it was audio only.

So installing the 32 bit program did not solve the problem. Thanks Mike!

Have you installed Canon's XF Codec. From their site it looks like the video portion is in a proprietary codec.

I have the Canon XF Utiity program. That program imports the files fine. I do not believe there is another program needed for Sony, but I am missing something. Is there another program or codex you are referring to? James

From a quick look around their site it seemed as though they have their own unique compressor. You should take a look at one of your files with a codec analyzer to see what it needs to function correctly in Vegas.

get one here: http://cleansofts.org/gspot.html

Thanks Jeff. I installed gspot. It shows that the video codec is installed. so very strange behavior...

Again when I drop that file on the vegas timeline - no video....

James,

I don't mean to insult you, but, have you ever installed or used a codec pack? This is really strange behavior you are having. My first thought is to look outside Vegas to what could be broken to cause this.

Can you post a link to a small file that does not show video in Vegas? I would like to take a look at it.

[James Redmond] "Thanks Jeff. I installed gspot. It shows that the video codec is installed. so very strange behavior..."
Is the codec a 32-bit codec or 64-bit codec. If it's 32-bit it will never show video in the 64-bit version of Vegas Pro. So even though GSpot says it's installed, it could just be the 32-bit version that's installed.
[James Redmond] "Again when I drop that file on the vegas timeline - no video...."
It could be that Vegas is not expecting that codec in an MXF container although you did say that it worked briefly with the 32-bit version of Vegas which leads me to believe that it may be a 32-bit codec only. I would contact Sony and ask if this camera is supported. You might also want to ask Canon what you have to do to edit this footage with 64-bit applications (i.e., is a proprietary codec needed or not)

John, I've edited both the Canon MFX files and the Nanoflash MFX fies on my 64 bit desktop with Sony 64 bit, without any problems.

I also can edit the footage with Sony Vegas 10, 32 bit without any problems. I am in the middle of an event, trying to figure this out.

Thanks, James

Ahhh... so the questions is, "What was on your desktop that is not on your laptop?" I would start by comparing installed programs and drivers between the two.

I am back from my event.

Here is more information about this unusual challenge.

I loaded a trail version of Sony Vegas 11 64 bit on a friend's i7 64 bit computer. All the files played.

I then uninstalled the 32 bit Song Vegas as Mike had recommended installing. and uninstalled the 64 bit Vegas. After reinstalling the 64 bit program, Vegas played and showed the files correct - both video and audio. I thought the problem was solved.

I closed the program, took the laptop to my hotel room, reopened Vegas a short time later and got error messages - at that point it said for the video "media offline" but was showing the audio waveform. It was the same MXF file that had both video and audio!!!

Then the program would no longer show any of the video - just the waveform of the audio of MXF files I dropped on the timeline.

Very strange. I am in contact with Sony support services. I was driving yesterday and not in front of the laptop so will call them today.

I will report back, especially if we figure it out. I will be leaving in a few days for another video shoot and might end up getting a different laptop... I just need something that works and I don't have to spend a lot of time getting it to work...

Thanks, James
