I need to take a 2 hour web file: AVC 640x360x12 MP4 file and extract about 30 min and upload back on the web. Is there a way to do this without further degrading the quality by rendering it again?

Not with Vegas but you can with a free utility like tsMuxeR using the Split & Cut option. You'll need to use Vegas to find out the in and out points in seconds and then use these in tsMuxeR to cut that part of the video out.

1. Do you happen to know if tsMuxeR allows multiple edits?
To my surprise, AviDemux seems to only allow one in and out point for trimming / splitting / cutting. If I want to keep 10 clips from a file, joined together, I would need to trim a clip, save as..., re-open the original, then repeat x 9, and finally, join the files together.

2. Why can't Vegas do this?
If AviDemux and tsMuxeR can split and join files, producing new video files without re-rendering, why can't Vegas?

No it only allows one edit. When I'm cutting commercials from cable TV recordings, I cut and save multiple times, then I bring all the saves back together and join them into one video. Tedious but it works.

Because it's an editor not a remuxer and as an editor, it expects to re-encode. I assume that smart-rendering MPEG4 is a lot harder than smart rendering MPEG2 but it would be a nice feature if they could figure out how to do it.

Until then, it's a matter of using the right tool for the job.

What an Opportunity! (for someone with the right skills)

I continue to be astounded that there is no software in which I can make multiple cuts to a video and save the edited version without re-rendering it.

Do you know why tsMuxeR (and/or AviDemux) do not support multiple edits?

(I've been wondering this for years - this is the first time I've asked.)

Nope. Not sure why no one has done this. There is an excellent cuts only editor (Womble) for SD MPEG2 but no one seems to have written one for MPEG4. It certainly would be popular.

Do these 2 programs do what we want? (applying multiple cuts, and saving the edited video without rendering)

SolveigMM Video Splitter looks like it might get the job done. I would download the trial and see how it works before you buy it. Then let us know. ;-)
