Whenever I try to render a .mp4 file in Vegas 11, it says "The reason for the error cannot be determined." Anything to fix this?

Does it happen with both Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC? Do you have any "codec-paks" installed? This should just work if your PC is clean.

It is just the MainConcept AVC. I have K-Lite Codec Pack installed on my computer for Windows Media Player, but not directly to Sony Vegas.

We are running a trial version of 11 now and experienced the same problem while rendering to Main Concept MP4. Would a clean uninstall and reinstall help? Is this related to 32-bit vs 64-bit versions of Vegas?

Will try Sony AVC codec next...

Hope we get this figured out soon as we render everything out in MainConcept now.

Thx!

S

It depends on if you also have any codec-paks installed. In general, you don't want to use these on a video editing computer.

I cant get Vegas 11 pro to show me the sony avc options when I render. Keep having to use main concept for now, how can a sony product keep having so much trouble with their own video format? Sometimes it shows up, sometimes it doesn't. does it have to do with the type of footage that is on the timeline? Anyone know? I have tried about everything including a clean install, but it does the same thing.

More than likely something on your PC is causing it not to work. I have never had any problems with the Sony AVC render type but I keep a clean PC. No codec-paks and nothing that's not needed. Something on your PC may be interfering. Try and figure out what it is that you do different from when it shows up to when it doesn't.

Hey John,
Thanks for the quick reply, unfortunately, the only thing I have changed is going from SVP10 to SVP11. The sony AVC codec never disappeared in SVP10. Although, I would have crashes occasionally, but these seemed to be CPU overheating, now have the Antec Kuhler which took care of that. I did just order a new video card (asus radeon 6870)hopefully that will help as well, but after I finish this current project I'm going to try a fresh install unless you have any other ideas. It seems that there are other people in the same boat as me. One thing I have noticed with svp10 and 11 is that Uniblue registry cleaner sees Vegas as a problem and removed it from the registry. But I had problems before using the registry cleaner. In my current project, I still cant find the AVC codec no matter what I do. It really sucks because the MainConcept takes forever to render.

A fresh install is always a good idea when crazy things like this happen.

I would never, ever, ever, use a registry cleaner. They have no idea what is good and what isn't. This is probably adding to the problem. I would stop using it.

More than likely this is what's causing the problem. You should never install any codec-pak to a computer that you edit video with. It messes things up (as you have seen). You can try uninstalling it and re-installing Vegas but there is no guarantee that it will uninstall cleanly. Worth a try though.

With svp11, i'm having the same problem here. i can't render using the Main Concept template. getting error

"The reason for the error cannot be determined"

It was working well in svp9.

Is there a solution to this?

Cheers,

Gilles

I found this solution to work for me and hope it helps others.
after selecting a template in the MainConcept encoder click on "customize template" and in the menu that pops up look toward the bottom and you will see "Encode mode". Click the down arrow next to it and select "render using CPU only". click OK and render away.
it took me quite a while to find a solution this problem but now all is well in render land. hope this helps.

Thanks for passing this along Jon,

I think SONY are stating that they fixed this bug in the latest revision.

I have yet to check.

God bless you for this! You just saved me from a failure to render two projects.

I'm not sure if this is significant, but I'm using a machine that does not have a GPU that can be leveraged by Vegas for rendering in the first place. I wonder if people that do have an appropriate graphics card are having the same issue in rendering to the .mp4 format.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i recall seeing that this was indeed fixed in the release notes of the latest VEGAS PRO version.

I just tested it and still have to select the ""render using CPU only" setting or it chokes.

sigh...

Thanks so much for that fix, Jon.

I noticed something else too. While you're in the render dialog box, you can right click on the mouse to expand/collapse all the available formats.

John - you are the best - months, builds, etc. I have been trying to figure out why I could not render mp4.

Thanks a million.

Charles

Thanks Jon, your tip saved me who knows how many hours. Recently had installed a FirePro V3900 on my Gigabyte 890 mobo. It chomps through many other rendering tasks, but crashes when used with Main Concept .mp4. You'd think that Sony would fix this - it's hardly an obscure issue in light of the emphasis that Sony makes on GPU rendering.
