I just can't figure it out anymore. Im done with Vegas 10. this is ridiculous. So many problems, and now that I've FINALLY gotten towards the end of the final product for my client, (adding one jpeg file in the left hand, lower corner as a logo, Vegas decides that after it gets to 5% it won't render any longer!!!!! Awesome!!!!!!!!!
Bought a new computer with 8 gigs of ram for this job because I was told that I wouldn't have any other problems with Vegas. There's noting on this computer, accept Sony vegas. That's it! Oh and also, when I render, sometimes the footage has little wave lines in it. hahahahahahahaha fantastic.

I share your frustration. How big is the JPG file? If it's being used as a logo it doesn't have to be very big.

What kind of files are you using? Do you by chance have a large still image about 5% into the project? I would try removing the still images from the whole project and doing a test render. If it works, Vegas has a problem with your pictures. you may be able to start a new project and insert each pic, set the preview window quality to best/full and clicking the floppy disc icon in the preview window to save it as a jpeg that will defenetly work in Vegas. Also what format videos are you putting on the timeline and what format are you rendering too?
We sence your frustration so give us a chance to help before you dump Vegas. I have been using it for many years and have had VERY little problems with it.

the jpeg is 51 kb. It's about 20 minutes in an 1.20 length video. I am rendering in 1080 60i to mt2. I rarely have any problems rendering without any lighting effects. But if I put anything in (move the brightness a smidge) it renders the video which takes over 2 hours. Rendering with no plug ins, takes about 20 minutes. And now I'm getting these white lines, almost like I plugd in the ray effect, but I didn't.
I'm also putting a clock effect (count down from 3:00) on top of the jpeg, but I haven't even tried that yet, because it won't render with the jpeg, I doubt it will with that plug in... If I missed a question, sorry, I'm flustered.

[Rion Gilpin] "the jpeg is 51 kb."
I'm sorry my question wasn't more precise. What are the dimensions of the JPEG (width and height) and what are the dimensions of your project?

It sounds like Vegas has a problem with one of the files in the timeline. I would put one video on it, render to m2t, if that works put one of the jpgs on it, drag it out to a few minutes and see if that works. We need to determine if it's a file conflict or a problem with Vegas. Can you render to other formats?

the pixel size is 1916 x 1080. well, it started to render a little more, but now it stops at 11%. the video I have is about 6 mixed martial arts fights. there's no plug ins. I didn't even fix any lighting because when I did that the actual video would take 3 days to render. and that was just adjusting brightness.
I can't render in any other format, no.

[Rion Gilpin] "the pixel size is 1916 x 1080."
I assume that's the size of the JPG? What is the size of your project?

I also think if you answer Danny's questions that might give us a clue about what's going on and that is:

What format are your source files?

In particular:
  1. Where did they come from: (camera make/model)?

  2. What file extension do they use (e.g., mov, avi, mp4) ?

  3. What codec do they use? (AVC/H.264, MJPEG, DV)?
What I thought I understood from your original post is that everything was working and rendering 100% correctly and that adding this JPG file was causing it not to render. I'm no longer sure that this is the case.

footage came from sony fx1. 1080 60i. Shot on sony mini dv HD tape and captured with sony tape deck into vegas with m2t files. Yes, everything was working in sony until recently when I tried adjusting the brightness. when I saw that it was rendering the footage poorly i stopped adjusting the brightness. I rendered without the brightness and it worked perfectly. took about 20 minutes to render the 70 minute video. At first,I input a png file and that's when it would only render 5 % of the footage to mpeg2. I than tried several different options of rendering (avi, wmv etc) with the same result. I than converted to jpeg, but got the same result. I than realized maybe it was stopping at 5% because that's about where the jpeg logo design started. So, I put the logo (jpeg) through the whole video. Starting from beginnning to end. So for the last 24 hours, it's been rendering 1080 60i mpeg2. And it's saying 20 more hours left.... but it's rendering past 5% : )

OK. Your camera is shooting HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080,29.97 fps). Your project settings should be set to exactly the same as your footage. Open a new project, under file/properties, select this setting in your template. Also make sure in your Options/Preferences, that enable no-recompress long GOP rendering is checked. Now with these settings, you should be able to put a m2t file from the camera on the timeline as is, with no effects, fades or anything that changes the rendered video from the original, Vegas will not recompress the file, meaning very little render time for that event. Try opening a new project with the settings as I stated above, put the original png file on the timeline, put the curser somewhare in the event area so it shows up in the preview window, set your preview window quality to Best/Full, and click the floppy icon in the preview window to take a jpeg pic if it at your 1440x1080 aspect ratio, put the newly made jpeg in the beginning of the timeline only as before. Now if you have no effects, fades, video overlapping other video, so that other than the area where the logo is, there is absolutly no change to the rendered file as the original m2t files, Vegas should only render the area where the logo is since the rendered video will be different there, then the rest of the render should take little or no time since your not changing it at all from the original, and your preview window should say "No recompression required". I just tried it by making a new project with these settings, put a one minute and ten seconds m2t file on the timeline, rendered to the same HDV 1080-60i (1440x1080,29.97 fps) and it took one minute and four seconds to render, and this is on a dual core laptop, and my preview window said "No re-compression required". Following these instructions should make a world of difference in your render times. Hope this helps, Danny Hays

[Danny Hays] "Also make sure in your Options/Preferences, that enable no-recompress long GOP rendering is checked. "
We don't know what format he's rendering to but it should be pointed out that this only helps if you are rendering back to HDV for some reason. If you are trying to create an MPEG2 DVD it will always render because the resolution and bit-rate are different.
[Danny Hays] "set your preview window quality to Best/Full, and click the floppy icon in the preview window to take a jpeg pic if it at your 1440x1080 aspect ratio, put the newly made jpeg in the beginning of the timeline only as before"
Yea, this was going to be my next suggestion. Do you understand what Danny is saying here? If you resize the logo to where you want it, and save the entire frame as a PNG file, Vegas will not have to resize during rendering. It will just overlay the 1440x1080 frame on top of your 1440x1080 video and this will render a lot faster.

yes thank you. These have been the settings since day 1 when I captured the video from the tape deck. HDV 1080 60i. Rendering does say no compression necessary, but it still took 20 hours. If I take a snapshot of the picture in the timeline, I won't be able to shrink it down to the size I want. (the jpeg is a logo watermark in the lower left hand corner). Or am I wrong about this? I am also fading it into the actual video, so there are some fx

oh and i ran into somemore problems. Just to see what it looks like I rendered in dvd architect dvd NTSC to see what it would look like. And there's not only no sound at all, but I have a timer clock countdown in the lower corner. that didn't show up. I'm using the trial verson of Newblue fx and that's where I got the time clock. Is there a reason why the clock wouldnt show up? and why no sound?

[Rion Gilpin] "Rendering does say no compression necessary, but it still took 20 hours."
When it says, "no recompression necessary" it is simply doing a file copy. If it is taking 20 hrs to copy a file, you have a problem with disk I/O. Are you rendering to the same drive you are reading from and is that your C: drive? At any rate, this is not a Vegas problem, this is a PC configuration problem.
[Rion Gilpin] " If I take a snapshot of the picture in the timeline, I won't be able to shrink it down to the size I want. (the jpeg is a logo watermark in the lower left hand corner). Or am I wrong about this?"
What Danny was saying is to create an empty project and use Vegas Track Motion to position the logo in the lower corner exactly the way you want it with the proper transparency and everything and then take snapshot using PNG. That will give you a full size overlay of the logo in the corner. Then use that in your project. Alternately, use Photoshop or some other graphics program to do the same. This will render quicker.
[Rion Gilpin] "I am also fading it into the actual video, so there are some fx"
You would still do that with the resulting PNG file when you use it in the main project.

No, I'm rendering to my external harddrive. Right now there's 250 gigs left on that external.

How is that external drive connected? If it's USB 2.0 it's going to be slower than if it is firewire or eSATA. If it's USB 1.1 it's going to be deadly slow.

Only when no recompression is required. Let's put it this way... copy the source file to the USB drive and time how long it takes. Your render will never be faster than the time it takes to copy the file.
