[Robert Given] "Any tips for editing hero hd footage in Vegas pro 10 would be greatly appreciated " Nothing special about editing GoPro Hero files. It's usually best to make your project match the media settings. This can be done on the Project Properties window like this:
[Robert Given] "I'll be outputting to youtube & standard DVD." Render to YouTube as Sony AVC with the Internet 1280x720-30p template. Render to DVD using MainConcept MPEG2 using the DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream for video and as Dolby Digital AC3 with the Stereo DVD template for audio.

Thanks for the tips John ! Seems like I'd read in one of the forums something about using proxy files & gear shift since the Hero HD files are h.264. Then again , I'd also read , just drop the files on the timeline & edit like always . I'll put it to the test this weekend , when I do the first shoot with this camera. I'd also like to thank you for helping me out with HDV settings 1 year ago , they worked perfectly .

[Robert Given] "Seems like I'd read in one of the forums something about using proxy files & gear shift since the Hero HD files are h.264. Then again , I'd also read , just drop the files on the timeline & edit like always . " If you have Vegas Pro 9 or earlier, I would use proxies with GearShift or CineForm intermediaries. If you have Vegas Pro 10 you can just drop them on the timeline. That's why you read conflicting reports. Vegas Pro 10 added support for more h.264 formats.

The new formats are a welcome addition to Vegas and editing is so much easier without proxy files.
John if I was wanting to export the 1080p 29.97fps gopro footage at the highest possible delivery format what would you suggest?
I'm having troubles exporting it to blu ray as the main formats for that appear to be interlaced - which the footage isn't or 24p which again it isn't.
The file is intended to be played back through a computer so ultimately the final format isn't relevant, just the quality.

I would render as Sony AVC using the Internet 16:9 HD 30p template and change the frame size to 1920x1080. Also increase the bit-rate until it matches the source.

Thanks John
How can I determine the source bitrate?

[James Souter] "How can I determine the source bitrate?" Read the manual on the GoPro Hero HD camera. Here is what their web site says:
HD Video Resolution Modes: (subject to change, pending final firmware release)
1080p = 1920×1080 pixels (16:9), 30 fps, 15 Mbit/s data rate
960p = 1280×960 pixels (4:3), 30 fps, 12 Mbit/s data rate
720p = 1280×720 pixels (16:9), 60 fps, 15 Mbit/s data rate
720p = 1280×720 pixels (16:9), 30 fps, 8 Mbit/s data rate
WVGA = 848×480 pixels (16:9), 60 fps, 8 Mbit/s data rate What did you use?

I used 1080p so I'll go for 15mb and see what the files size ends up like - presumably something similar to the original which is fine.

Sounds like a plan. Then save the preset so that you just need to select it the next time and not have to tweak any of the parameters again. Let us know how you make out.

So unfortunately there was still quite a bit of quality loss... I'll have a play with some of the settings
Any other templates that I should try?

• | | | |  | Re: GoPro Hero Hd in Vegas pro 10 ? by James Souter on Mar 18, 2011 at 4:59:57 am |
I should clarify - there isn't heaps of quality loss, but there is enough that it is noticeable

If you are rendering 1920x1080 15Mbps AVC/h.264 video as 1920x1080 15Mbps AVC/h.264 video... that's as good as it gets. There will always be some quality loss when re-rendering. You could try the MainConcept AVC encoder with the same specs and see if it does a better job.

What is the difference between rendering in 30fps and 60fps?
| | | | |
• | | | |  | Re: GoPro Hero Hd in Vegas pro 10 ? by John Rofrano on Nov 13, 2011 at 2:56:31 pm |
[Don Scott] "What is the difference between rendering in 30fps and 60fps?" 30 frames. ;-)
Well... more frames means smoother movement. So 60fps should give you smoother movement than 30fps. That assumes you are watching on a device that can actually playback 60fps. Most TV's will not. (of course this assume that you actually acquired the footage at 60fps)

Yea, the footage I have is 60fps. Does Facebook video or Youtube support 60fps videos?
I rendered the same video with the same settings, except I changed the fps (30 & 60), but for some reason the 60fps video is smaller in size (mbs). Why is that?
Thank You

[Don Scott] "Does Facebook video or Youtube support 60fps videos?" I don't think so, nor would I want to deliver that. It's too many frames for Internet video bandwidth. That's double the data rate for something your eyes can barely perceive. IMHO it's not worth it but I guess if you had really fast motion sports or something it might benefit. I guess over time they'll support it but most video won't benefit from it.

hi everybody i have some questions to.any help will be appreciated..i have an HD Hero 2 and the problem is when rendering at 720p 60fps..before rendering when i just play the video in Media Player and VLC the quality is amazing and you can easily notice the 60fps smoothness..but after rendering that smoothness is gone and it looks like a 30fps video..i tried the ''match media project settings'' and it doesn't works.i also tried manually changing the frame rate to more than 60.000 in the rendering options and still nothing..any suggestions.? i am rendering in Main COncept AVC/AAC (*.MP4) internet HD1080 or internet HD720

[Vincent Valentine] ".i tried the ''match media project settings'' and it doesn't works.i also tried manually changing the frame rate to more than 60.000 in the rendering options and still nothing..any suggestions.? i am rendering in Main COncept AVC/AAC (*.MP4) internet HD1080 or internet HD720" If you are working with 720/60p video then you should use the project template HD 720-60p (1280x720, 59.940 fps).
The Main Concept AVC encoder will not render frame rates greater than 29.97 which is why the motion doesn't look as smooth. Try using the Sony AVC encoder instead. That will allow you to render at 59.940fps (which is what you want not 60.000).

thank you for your quick reply..i am already using the template of 1280x720 60p..i just checked the Sony AVC encoder and there's no option for 1280x720..the lowest resolution is at 1440x1080 at 60i not 60p..i am using Vegas Pro 11 by the way and maybe there is no such an option..the option i have are :
Memory Stick QVGA 512
Memory Stick QVGA 896
Memory Stick QVGA 1128
Memory Stick QVGA Baseline 512
Memory Stick QVGA Baseline 896
Memory Stick QVGA Widescreen 512

Memory Stick SD NTSC - 6256
Memory Stick SD NTSC widescreen - 2128
Memory Stick SD NTSC widescreen - 3128

AVCHD 1920x1080 50i
Blu-Ray 1440x1080 60i, 8 Mbps video stream
Blu-Ray 1440x1080 50i, 8 Mbps video stream

Blu-Ray 1920x1080 24p, 16 Mbps video stream
Blu-Ray 1920x1080 24p, 10 Mbps video stream
i tried the 1440x1280 option with some changes and managed to render something close to 60fps but not exactly..any other idea.?

Yes, if all you have is Vegas Pro 11.0, then you will have to make your own template. In previous versions of Sony Vegas Pro there were Internet templates for 720p but those have been moved to the MainConcept AVC encoder in Vegas Pro 11.0.
Here is the Vegas Pro 10.0 Sony AVC template for Internet 720-30p:
Just make your own based on this and change the frame rate to 59.940 (Double NTSC).
