Hi Folks,
I am looking for some recommendations:
I Sold off my Video production company and am currently involved mainly in Web development.
I just recently got a Job to travel to France to capture some video of an estate. (old client who wants me to do it)
I will bring a Sony HD HVR-V1u camera. I have Vegas 7 and want to capture about 1.5 hours of video. The final output will be DVD.
Last time I shot Video it was on DVCAM.
Laptop needed My Laptop is a bit outdated. I need one that can handle this project: recommendations appreciated.
Also I see this Camera can output several different formats to Capture. Any suggestions would be appreciated here as well.
I will be capturing via Firewire.
I want to capture the footage to the laptop because I am concerned about damage to tape through the airport security.
My knowledge is outdated here and I have to leave next week with all my ducks in a row.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Best Wishes,
Rick

Tape: I have carried tape through the airport multiple multiple times without issue.
Laptop: I have a laptop with 1.5gigs, vista home premium and 160 gigs of 5400rpm drive space. I have captured straight to it in HDV via Vegas capture without issue or hiccup. It is a core duo and I got it off dealnews.com from Bestbuy for 300USD. It is about a cheap as you can get and still be a laptop :) and it worked perfectly for capture.
Now, I would not edit on it for anything as it succumbs to lag quite often.
Output: Depends on what your client is looking for- I would be asking him/her if she wants 24p, 29.97fps, widescreen DV, 4:3, or HD 1080i/p. Once you know if they want standard def or high def, then see if they want it to be 24p or 29.97.

Hi Richard O'Brien,
I'm glad to hear your traveling to France. Beautiful place to travel to. I've been there a few times along with many other places throughout the world. I recently returned from the Batics which included Russia. Lets get to the point of the posting. Don't worry about your tapes, you'll be fine only if you carry on your tapes onto the plane. Let it go through the x-ray machine. That's no problem. I shoot with a Canon GL2 and use Maxell tapes. Usually I bring around 12 tapes with me. All the years I've traveled, never had a problem with my tapes or CF cards for my Canon 40D. Never, never check in your tapes with your luggage. The x-ray machines will destroy your tapes.
