Fraps + Vegas = Rendering Crashes. Need help
by Carl Benson on Aug 27, 2009 at 8:29:47 pm

Hi guys,

I’m at work, so I’ll be brief out of necessity. I play wow (world of warcraft) and have begun Fraps’ing our achievement runs (important stuff =). I Fraps with the latest version of Fraps and do so at full-size (1900x1200) @ 30fps. The goal is to make the movies for publishing to Youtube & WCM (Warcraft Movies) websites.

Each encounter results in around 4-6 3.9GB raw avi files of footage. I import them into Sony Vegas 9 (updated), add some music, do basically zero editing until I learn more about it, and then render the movie. I do so at the following settings:

Sony AVC (mp4)
HDV (1280x720) 29.97fps

I then render the movie and 3 of 4 times it has crashed after saying “Unrecognized File Format. Please update to the latest version of Fraps”. So I uninstalled Fraps, cleaned the registry entries, and reinstalled the newest version directly from Fraps website.

I then Fraps’ed an encounter last night and dropped it into Vegas for publishing and it crashed again. Each time it happens 25%-40% of the way through. The funny thing is, this time before I even began to render, I was scrolling through the footage on the timeline and midway through got the pop-up saying “Fraps error. Please update your Fraps” or something to that effect. It did not crash, however, and I was able to continue scrolling through the footage. But when I rendered, it crashed again.

So I’m hoping you guys could give me a nudge in the right direction. I’m not opposed to doing my own homework, but I do need a push in the right direction when learning new things. I’m wondering what is causing the errors, should I Fraps at 29.97fps instead of 30fps since that is what Vegas does, and is it a resolution issue going from 1900x1200 to 1280x720? Also, is mp4 the best quality to publish with or should I be using something else? I’ve looked in the options for that h264 that the top WoW guilds make their movies in with Vegas, but don’t see it anywhere. Anyways, thanks so much!

What does FRAPS save the file as? Is it an avi wrapped file? Can you post a portion of one online somewhere where I can download it and give it a go for you?

I'd assume so, yes. As you can tell, I'm in the extreme nubbery status right now.

The files Fraps takes are massive (90 seconds = 4GB), but I guess you only need to see a file, so it could just be a tiny 3-5 second length file, yes?

I could be 3-5 seconds. Are you the same person as the original poster?
