Can't bring mpeg files to timeline in V6
by Richard Klimesh on Aug 17, 2009 at 1:39:09 am

Vegas 6.0d Build210. I imported a video from a DVD disk and all of the files were saved as .mpg (mpeg). When I try to bring a file to the Vegas timeline I get this error message: "The file format plugin for the specified format was not properly initialized."

What does this mean and how do I proceed? Thanks.

Did you import them with File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc...? Can you play the MPG files outside of Vegas? It sounds like maybe something got corrupt in your Vegas install. It might be worth re-installing Vegas 6 just to make sure all of the software is installed correctly.

This is a DVD I mastered in DVD Architect and had made from a glass master. (I lost the original files so need to get the program files off the DVD).

Yes, I did import the program with File | Import | DVD Camcorder Disc, which took about 3 hours. It didn't import directly into Vegas but asked to save to a directory, which I did.

No, the files won't play with any program because each file, like "VTS_06_1 (01)", is only 1KB, so something is amiss. I'm importing again right now and will see what I get this time.

Richard, see if the techniques I discussed in the Import VOB Files to Timeline thread will work for you.

Brilliant, Mike. A quick, simple, elegant solution. Shrink did, however, save the DVD as 47 VOB files, not one big one. But that's great in this case because I need to work on the files one at a time anyway. Thanks so much.

"Shrink did, however, save the DVD as 47 VOB files, not one big one"

That's not supposed to happen.
It should have been one very large VOB file.
I suspect that the step you missed was:

Go to Edit -> Preferences - Output Files.
Make sure that "Split VOB files ..." is NOT checked.

"But that's great in this case..."

As long as it worked for you, I'm glad :-)

"Split VOB Files" definitely was not checked.

I'm going to blame the gremlins then as I have no idea why that would happen :-)
