System req. HDV(not AVCHD) Movie Studio Plat.
by Colleen Thunes on Aug 16, 2009 at 3:58:53 am

I'm buying a new camera, the Canon HV40. We plan on upping the RAM on our Dell from 2GB to 4GB and get an external hard drive. I'd like to edit HDV video with SV Movie Studio Platinum. Will my laptop be able to edit HDV or will I need to use proxy files in something like Video Studio Pro x2?

Dell Laptop Intel Core 2 Duo T7300@2GHz
RAM 2GB (but will update to 4 GB)
Hard Disk 160GB (but will be getting external hard drive)
Vista Home 32-bit

Getting 4GB of memory will not help Movie Studio at all because you are running Vista 32 and each application is limited to 2GB of memory. 4GB will allow you to have more applications open at the same time but any single application will not get any more memory than it already has today (and Vista 32 will only use approximately 3.25GB of it anyway).

A 2.0GHz Core 2 CPU will work but it will not be a smooth editing experience. I'd say a 2.4GHz is minimum but if a 2.0 is all you have then you'll have to keep your preview low and deal with it.
